You're likely searching here because you need some help. Some guidance. You may be in crisis and need someone to talk to about what's happening inside of you. Or you may find yourself repeating the same patterns in relationships leading to emotional pain, anxiety and loneliness. Most of us tend to operate on autopilot allowing our unconscious mind to repeat patterns. Often, our past gets enacted in the present. I believe, that which can be named can be healed. When we have the courage to look inward in the presence of an empathetic other we experience the true freedom of psychotherapy. That freedom is awareness and choice.

You want to be listened to--really heard. You are sick and tired of conflict that creates lonely distance between you and your partner. You would like fewer angry moments and more times when you feel close and connected to your partner. You want the tools and skills to have RESPECTFUL conflict conversations that bring you closer. You are ready to grow, if only someone really understood you and had the expertise to coach both of you each step of the way. You may be feeling discouraged: "We've tried everything." So you want couples therapy rooted in solid research and a therapist who tailors it to your unique situation.

I grew up in an environment full of tension and abuse and often felt labeled the family's black sheep. To escape, I withdrew and shut out the world. Decades later, I found my way to therapy. It was an overwhelming process to get started. But I persevered because I needed a way out of my pain. Slowly through therapy, I became someone that I respected and felt more connected to myself and others. I can now say that I live a more balanced and hopeful life.

I have worked with victims of rape, sexual assault & domestic violence from children as young as five to adults.
Congratulations on taking the first step toward healing. One of the most difficult things is to find a therapist who you feel "gets" you, that you feel you can build rapport with. I am a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and have experience working with children, adolescents and adults, those suffering from trauma, sexual assault, grief and loss, and those struggling with school issues (academic under achievement, bullying, emotional disturbance, students with IEPs) providing services via Google Meet, video phone.

For over 24 years, I've collaborated with people to resolve their psychological trauma, phobias, anxiety & stress as well as maximize responses to their medical diagnoses, treatments & conditions. This clinical focus stems from both a personal medical challenge since age 12 and research on treating women with breast cancer and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet Kaiser research (1998) finding 70% of primary care visits are driven by mental, emotional and relational issues highlights how mind and body are interwoven for each of us. This interplay provides leverage for preventive medicine, for responding to illness and for maximizing peak performance.

You're using drugs/alcohol too much, and you can't stop. You are lost, miserable and scared, and you want to be found. I offer a compassionate, supportive and direct approach to help you meet your needs and achieve your goals. You're ready to explore your underlying, and probably ancient, beliefs that you hold about yourself and that fuel chronic negative thoughts and behaviors. We will work together to rediscover your authentic self, that person who was somehow left behind and is waiting for you to come back. I provide an eclectic approach. You receive a personal assessment, then focused treatment that best fits you.

As human beings, we are wired to be resilient; we find ways to adapt to our surroundings, solve problems, and navigate the challenges of daily life. And yet, we all face times when we struggle to access our inner strengths and start to feel unsettled, depleted, or overwhelmed. We may feel as though we are no longer thriving, but merely surviving.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
