After 30+ years practicing psychotherapy and marriage counseling, I still find relationships issues to be a major reason why people come to therapy. Relationships can sometimes be too emotionally merged, or too emotionally distant and isolating (however, there are times when relationships feel both merged and isolating all at the same time). My focus is on helping people realize and alter emotional issues that pop up over and over again and consistently inhibit relationships. Sometimes we know we're stuck or lost in a relationship, but we just can't figure out...any way 'out' of what we feel.

Sometime life gets crazy. Sometime, despite all our efforts, what we're doing to cope with a difficult situation just doesn't seem to be enough. If you're at that point, I may be able to help. My style in therapy is practical, goal-oriented, solution-focused and strength-based. I endeavor to use your strengths and bolster them to help you get to the place you want to be. I can also teach you new coping skills and techniques that will be successful across different situations and environments. This lays the groundwork for more calm, confidence and productivity going forward.

Life can be so unbelievably hard. We may be left thinking, “I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to change,” or, “Is something wrong with me for feeling this way?” We may feel unable to connect with our most important people about what is really going on. We may feel unable to connect with ourselves. I get it—I’ve been there, too. I also know that with the right support, you don’t have to get stuck, go through this alone, or feel this way forever. No matter where you’re starting from, it is never too early or too late to heal, change, and grow.

Seeking a therapist can be an unsettling endeavor. I can provide a free 10-minute phone consultation to help you determine whether or not we are a good fit. As your therapist, I bring a whole-person approach to healing the past and maximizing the present. My approach is an eclectic one and with over 30 years counseling experience, my "toolbox" is "well-stocked". We all have our own intuitive wisdom to guide us but we may need help in learning how to hear and honor these messages. I am confident that we can work collaboratively to create the life that you desire.

My most curious question is: what do you want? how do you want to be different? How do you want your life to reflect about you, what you care about, what your values are? Therapists should be honest, truthful and direct with clients. I have a commitment to be direct with empathy and compassion to each and every client I work with in my office. Therapy should be solution focused with a clearly defined plan driven by the client. Vague goals, vague results. Today. most clients seeking therapy are seeking relief and understanding within a reasonable period of time. Again, that timeframe should be determined by the client.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
