Accepting New Clients. We help adults transcend their painful past of childhood and/or sexual trauma to create healthier parenting connections and interpersonal relationships. Are you and your partner struggling to relate to one another? Are you not feeling fulfilled with your current life? Do you feel disconnected from family and friends? Do you find it difficult to make and keep relationships? Do you give and give in hope others will give back to you? Do your thoughts and emotions stop you from moving forward? Does any of this cause you to spend more time alone or cloud your judgement?

I believe we all possess unique strengths that can help us overcome obstacles and reach newfound potentials. Often, our strengths end up buried or bruised by the complexities of life, and we could use some help. "Why do I keep feeling this way?" "What am I feeling?" "Who am I?" "Is this normal?" "Why does this keep happening?" These are some common questions that bring people to seek therapy. I see these questions as beacons of light. Together, in therapy, we can take this light and learn to better navigate through dark and twisted hallways of anxiety, trauma, shame, depression, etc... out into fresh air in which to THRIVE.

Seeing your child struggle is heartbreaking: you are not alone. Whether your child is having difficulty fitting in at school or dealing with trauma, no issue is too big or small to seek help. Partnering with a therapist can provide a safe space for your child to learn and grow as well as a place where you can feel supported as a parent. My goal is to develop a relationship with your child to better understand what approaches “click” with them. I use a variety of techniques to assist youth in managing their emotions and learn new skills to help them navigate the world around them, including evidenced-based play therapy interventions.

Life transitions can be harder than we expected. Maybe you are not handling life’s challenges as well as you had hoped. Maybe you are navigating these issues on top of a history of trauma or adverse childhood/life experiences. It is understandable you may sometimes not recognize yourself and feel overwhelmed, guilty and lost. You do not have to navigate life’s challenges alone. I provide a compassionate, down-to-earth and non-judgmental approach to help you feel comfortable, validated and gently challenged during the therapeutic process. Together, we will work to help you find a path forward and rediscover your sense of purpose.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
