There are times when life is overwhelming - you feel that your relationships, work, stress, your trauma, your moods are more in control than you are. Do you wonder where do I go from here? How do I make a change? It takes courage to seek understanding and work through the fear of change, but you are ready. You don’t want to feel this way anymore…Life is too short to feel stuck. Are you looking for a safe and welcoming space to discover a pathway forward amid life’s challenges? Are you ready to experience the power of developing a trusting relationship in an insightful, warm, non-judgmental environment? The first step is showing up.

Finding the energy to maintain a facade of everything being okay is becoming increasingly difficult. The weight of anxiety, depression, trauma, and significant life changes can lead to interpersonal difficulties, challenges, and disruptions in your life. It's exhausting, frustrating, and you might not be sure about the way forward, but you know change is needed. I can help.

My passion as a therapist is helping couples and families establish a safe, secure connection. This often involves healing a past injury. I have extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, an empirically validated therapy based in attachment theory. I also work with individuals to help recover from depression and establish ways to manage anxiety. Parenting, including co-parenting for divorced couples is another passion of mine.

I am a Virginia State Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience working in the field, and have specialized training in working with children and their families, play therapy, and the expressive therapies. Psychotherapy profoundly changes lives, and I believe the relationship or "fit" between the therapist and client is one of the most important factors in a successful psychotherapy. My hope is to create a trusting, compassionate relationship, and a private experience in which you feel understood. I can help you better understand the underlying issues which may be contributing to your struggles. You will begin to feel relieved, feel better about yourself, create better relationships, make clearer decisions, resolve painful past experiences, and feel more in control of your life.

Counseling is a journey towards integration. I'm here to help you overcome anxiety or depression, traumas of any kind, or if you are simply looking for someone to listen to you and provide a non-judgmental and accepting place for you to process life's experiences. I profoundly believe that you do not enter therapy "broken" or that clients need to be "fixed". By learning self-compassion and acceptance, most of our struggles can be understood as manifestations or behaviors that follow from wounds or traumas. The journey is about healing and transformation, rather than getting over something.

Physical and emotional intimacy can be difficult topics to broach, whether with yourself or with one or more partners. I work with your comfort level and at your pace. I work with low sexual desire, avoidance of intimacy, sexual identity or orientation, gender identity, Sexual anxiety, and sexual dysfunctions.

With over 40 years as a practicing psychologist, I have learned that it is not just the latest technique that helps people change, but being deeply understood in a trusting therapy relationship. My aim is to help you not only to recover from your immediate emotional problems, but to explore the interpersonal blind spots that contributed to their development so that you can find more fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
