Every one of us, at some point in our lives, encounters difficulty and hardship. At times, the challenges we find ourselves facing seem insurmountable. Perhaps you had a difficult and painful childhood that interferes with your ability to find happiness and comfort. Maybe your current or past relationships have been draining and confusing—full of conflict and hurt. Have you recently experienced something life-altering or traumatic? Or, are you struggling with unwelcome feelings and behaviors that impact your health, relationships, or career? Whatever obstacles you’re facing, therapy can be an invaluable and freeing experience.

Have you ever experienced a scary situation that turned your world upside down? Do you ever feel as if you’re reliving the event all of the sudden? Or perhaps you find yourself feeling intense fear, anxiety, shame, sadness, or disconnected from yourself, or maybe you are just numb to all feelings. Trauma can come in many different forms. It can result from experiencing abuse as a child, racism or homophobia, witnessing violence at home or in your community, or other situations where you felt powerless and afraid. Many people who have experienced trauma are left to deal with the difficult emotions that seem to come out of nowhere.

There are many misconceptions about what it means to be in therapy. Anyone can benefit from therapy regardless of what walk of life they come from. It does not mean that you are broken, weak or crazy. What it does mean is that you are up for the challenge of confronting harmful beliefs, habits, and communication styles so that you can live a life that is authentically yours. Sitting across from this screen right now takes courage and vulnerability. Our mental health shows itself in all areas of our lives: relationships, perception, management of daily life, sense of self, and our ability connect to our emotions and body.

I am temporarily accepting additional clients who genuinely want to transform their life into something better. Is that you? I work with my clients in Spanish because it was the language that shaped our perceptions of the world and the people we lived with at an early age. Even if you grew up bilingual, Spanish was the language your mother and father used. Whether we are immigrants or were born in the United States, it is our ancestral Latino language that contains the roots of our current experience. It also contains the keys to breaking through barriers we are currently experiencing with our health, wealth, and relationships.

I work with a wide range of clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds in person and remotely. Clients learn to reduce stress and work with their feelings in ways that lead to personal growth and development. Mindfulness, deep breathing and body awareness are used to reduce anxiety, depression, excessive self-criticism, perfectionism, detachment and emotional flooding. These problematic feelings can lead to growth, greater empathy for self and others as well as greater kindness towards others in their life when worked with creatively in psychotherapy.

It may be that life deals us the unexpected, or perhaps things just slowly begin to feel “off”—whatever the case may be, we can find growth and healing by exploring the ways our past affects our present. Scary? Definitely! But accessing these versions of ourselves that have been dormant is what helps us shift from surviving to thriving. Whether you’ve been experiencing anxiety, depression, life transition, trauma, or feeling burned out, I can help become a truer version of yourself. For your convenience, I offer online appointments for clients located in DC and MD, or in person appointments at my office in Farragut Square, DC.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
