I use cognitive behavioral therapy to help people improve their mental health. I believe that each person deserves treatment tailored to their experience and needs. In session, I help people change patterns of unhealthy thoughts or behaviors and examine meaning of life experiences. As a counselor, I am open-minded, analytical, and casual while allowing space for challenging clients to improve their lives. I practice from an informed consent perspective aimed at reducing barriers to care and emphasizing bodily autonomy. This often involves writing letters of support for medical transition services.

I focus on helping you build and maintain healthy relationships: personal, professional, romantic and sexual relationships. This includes individual counseling, couples counseling, and sex therapy. In individual counseling we can talk through trauma, negative thoughts, adjustments, questions of identity, happiness, or life goals. Relationships require continued trust, communication, and deep awareness of each other’s worlds. I work with couples, including polyamorous, non-monogamous, kinky, etc., to build connection, trust, and intimacy in their relationships. I also help partners learn to manage conflict more effectively. I help partners find ways to communicate about difficult and sensitive issues. This is important when partners struggle to connect around each other's unique sexual wants and needs. These conversations need an atmosphere of trust, acceptance, and non-judgment, as partners learn to validate and respond to each other's sexual selves.

Everyone is molded from their experiences, perspectives, and identities which can shaped a sense of reality. Our racial identity, social class, sexuality, and ethnic backgrounds shapes us in developing wisdom/techniques of resiliency to endure distressing moments. These same experiences can become increasingly distressing which can lead us into believing unauthentic beliefs of who we really are. For healing to take place, a requirement of safety/security need to be present in order for authenticity to be formed. Often is the case where strength and growth is developed when faced with the discomforts of the past.

I've been counseling men and couples for over 40 years. My specialties are men with compulsive/addictive sexual behaviors, unresolved childhood abuse/trauma/neglect, anxiety/depression, relationship problems and intimacy issues. I also do couple's therapy teaching and helping couples in good communication and conflict management and how to heal from infidelity. Cornerstone has 5 outpatient treatment groups for men with sexual addiction. We also have very skilled therapist who treat childhood trauma and neglect with very highly regarded therapeutic methods and approaches including EMDR, Sensorimotor and Pesso Psychomotor Therapy.

Much of my work is centered around gender – from issues surrounding identity exploration, to social/medical transition, to gender dysphoria, to gender-identity-related interpersonal challenges. Some of my favorite work is in helping to bridge the communication gaps between teens and their families after a teen has come out as trans/gender nonconforming! I also have experience with depression, anxiety, substance use, military families, sexuality and sexual health, emetophobia (phobia of vomit), phase-of-life challenges, uncertainty/anxiety about the future, kink/BDSM, and partner conflict/miscommunication.

When I think about my ideal clients, I think about all the folks I used to serve as a sex educator. Having spent the past 10+ years in sex education, I believe that many of us carry cultural stigma due to sex negative ideals perpetrated by our society. As a therapist I specialize in working with: Kinky clients, non-monogamous clients, clients that work within the sex industry, and clients that are figuring out their sexuality. My ideal clients are looking for a therapist that is affirming of their relationship with sexuality and who will not shame you for your sexual identity.

I operate from a sex positive theoretical background; free of shame and pleasure-focused. I have a special focus on those recovering from religious trauma and/or purity culture narratives. Additionally, I offer community education on body image and sexuality. I am also an AAMFT Approved Clinical Supervisor and am accepting individual supervisees for virtual supervision from MN, WI, OH, MI, ND, IL, CT, TX, CA, and FL.
