When appropriate, I engage clients on an existential level, assisting them in clarifying the meaning of their lives.

Voted Utah's Best Therapist 2022 + 2023. My approach centers the wisdom of our body, nature + relationships as the most valuable components in healing. Under enough stress, all humans make adaptations to survival. These survival strategies do a great job when they are first learned, but when continued outside of the context of their creation, they can reenact + reinforce patterns that are no longer helpful. It’s in this understanding that we work together to identify where patterns began, what behaviors were learned for emotional and physical survival + how we can create new ways of interacting in the world that feel more whole.

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at the Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment (UCEBT) with experience in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, adults, couples & families. I am particularly passionate about working with individuals who cope with their emotions by engaging in excessive self-control. These individuals are often described as being “type A”, perfectionistic, guarded, and hard to read. While our society usually puts a high value on our ability to exert self-control and delay gratification to achieve our goals, research has shown that too much self-control can hurt us, especially our relationships!

I have a strong belief in the possibilities of healing, growth and change within an authentic collaborative client/therapist relationship. I have over 18 years of experience working with individuals and families recovering from trauma, living with chronic illness, working through relationship concerns and facing the challenges of mental illness. Taking the first steps to heal is often difficult, or even painful, however in doing so we can create a "path with heart" and meaning. I take a mindfulness based, goal oriented and active approach to therapy with focus on developing critical life skills.

My identity as a person and clinician developed during my time at Randolph-Macon Woman's College where I lived among confident and intelligent women from all over the world. I learned the value of asking questions and began to understand the value of ambiguity in one's search for clarity. I believe there is goodness within us and that we deserve a chance to be our genuine selves in the presence of others. I aim to provide a safe space for self-expression and discovery. Clients are offered a confidential, non-judgmental environment where they are heard and understood.

I appreciate the complexity of people. I believe in trying to understand all aspects in someone's life and recognizing the impact of their experiences, relationships, and understandings into the current way of life. There are reasons for certain beliefs about ourselves and others. I utilize my training and my own self in helping a client come to witness ideas and behaviors within themselves And then, find ways to make changes, find balance, and maybe even happiness.

Many people come to my office saying: "Nothing ever changes in my life"; "I'm not good enough"; "I work so hard! Where is my success?"; "Why can't I get along with my partner?"; and, "I feel so alone." In each of these settings, I use a fun-loving, real and powerful approach - using evidence-based therapies and effective interpersonal skills - to validate, accept and support my clients in achieving their goals. I do this by teaching them skills to enjoy their life and relationships, and regulate intense physical, spiritual, mental, and/or emotional thoughts and behaviors.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
