I believe there is always hope. Hope to reach balance. Hope to reach peace. Hope to heal. Hope to grow. With the help of a strong therapeutic relationship and appropriate interventions, I believe individuals can learn more about themselves through exploring past and present life occurrences. Within that process, present and future doubts, fears, or concerns can simultaneously be addressed.

Are you looking for a space that feels safe, authentic, and supportive? Does it seem as if you have done all that you can to find the answers? Managing life at any age can seem very difficult. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out alone. I enjoy partnering with teens, young adults, and families as they make an investment to life overcome these challenges. One of the bravest things you can do is take ahold of your life journey.

Pflugerville Counseling Center offers a wide range of counseling services to individuals, families, couples, and children/teens. Though each of us specializes in different areas, we all hold a belief that counseling is most helpful when it is about having a safe relationship to more fully explore, understand, and accept self and the choices we make. We believe that everyone has a story and the more we can own our stories, the more choice and control we have over writing the next chapters. We all love working with the brain/body/relationship connection we all hold within ourselves and between each other.

My approach in therapy is to help you recognize your strengths, increase self-compassion, and adopt a curious approach to your current thoughts and beliefs which perpetuate the current patterns you are seeking to change. I use a variety of lenses in my approach including: Attachment theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Trauma informed, and Family Systems. This is your journey and my role is to meet you where you are and travel with you at a pace that you set.

As humans, we not only want to feel understood but we want to understand ourselves. Why do we do the things we do? The goal is to help people gain insight in the nature of their situation as well as help them develop skills for taking action and making needed changes to feel more in control of their life.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
