"You cannot change or heal what you do not acknowledge." (Unknown) I believe in utilizing therapy as an opportunity to assist individuals, couples, and families in acknowledging and overcoming barriers to healing and change. I create an authentic, collaborative and non-judgmental therapeutic space where clients are able to address areas in life that aren't working (anxiety, anger, depression, low self-esteem, relationships, painful experiences); to explore and resolve the internal and relational barriers that limits healing and personal growth; and to create an action plan that empowers clients to live out their full potential.

Giving your emotions a voice can be a freeing and validating experience. It is my role to help this process happen in a way that is safe and meaningful to bring hope and awareness into your life.

I strive to adopt an approach that is conversational, comfortable and non - judgemental. Clients have consistently reported feeling at ease and free to "be themselves". I employ a variety of interventions and approaches including Cognitive Behavioral (what we think determines what we feel and do), brief, family systems, structural and any and all others to assist most effectively.

I believe that therapy can develop non-judgmental awareness of what is in the present, of thoughts and feelings that are based on conditioned reactions from the past, and of the ability to then cultivate the inner freedom that allows each client to move into a future grounded in experience and directed at a positive and compassionate understanding of self and others. Developing the ability to be aware is a practice that each client learns and practices according to their presenting needs, interests, and learning styles. There is no ideal client, there is only the commitment to practice awareness and find freedom from the past.

One of the main unspoken rules of therapy is the 80-20 rule; 80 percent istening and 20 percent talking. This usually means that the therapist is doing most of the listening. As a therapist who has received my fair share of therapy, having someone just sit there and listen can be very weird! My goal is to allow my clients to feel heard while actively engaging with them, all the while building and adding tools to overcome their challenges. With an integrated approach, we can collaborate to work through them.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
