Do you feel that life could be more joyful, more meaningful, more productive, more balanced - but don’t know how to access this elusive "more"? You may have had a hard time finding your footing after a big life event or transition. It's common to struggle with identifying and communicating about what you think, feel, want and need. You may feel disconnected from friends and family and don't know how to ask for or accept help. The more we try to cover up what we're struggling with, the more we feel alone and fear being "exposed." This can cause us to feel inauthentic, awkward or ashamed and we may experience anxiety and depression.

I provide traditional talk therapy and art therapy. Oftentimes it can be difficult to discern what exactly we are feeling, but I find that recognizing the way emotions present themselves in our bodies can help anchor our understanding and process confusing experiences. Sometimes feelings can be so overwhelming that the idea of putting them into words feels impossible, but through therapy we can do it together. I work through a trauma-informed lens and focus on collaboratively fostering a sense of safety, empowerment, human connection, and a sense of agency.

Applications for South Asian Men's Group - more info under "Gallery." I am a Bangladeshi-American psychotherapist trained at Smith College, and my primary goal in therapy is to help you live a life that deeply aligns with your truest self. Having lived in both Bangladesh and the US, I know firsthand the struggle of feeling as if we are “too much” or “too little” of the identity we are often expected to embody. As a queer woman of color who grew up in predominantly homogeneous spaces, I strongly believe in the importance of not just allowing, but encouraging and celebrating the full expression of our nuanced and glorious selves.

As an active therapist, I help individuals, couples, families, and children identify and transform the story that has been governing their life. It is my belief, that with the right support everyone has the innate capability to show up and transform their life. Past or present circumstances may have created pain or a belief of powerlessness, but these circumstances do not define you. You can reclaim your power and sense of authorship over your own life. In the words of Marianne Wiliamson, " Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

I work primarily with people of color, queer and trans folks coping with anxiety, depression, life transitions and relationship issues. I aim to help you tune into how you're truly feeling, while centering radical self-compassion. Healing and liberation come in many different forms and we will work collaboratively to understand your individual goals and needs. Ours will be an open space, free of judgment, to explore thoughts and feelings you may not otherwise have a place to address. One of the first steps toward healing is being seen and heard authentically and in our work together we will begin there.

Are you living the life you want? Is your relationship a source of pain for you? Are you arguing more, trusting less, or finding yourself not looking forward to spending time together? Maybe your relationship feels stuck, like you're just replaying the same disagreement over and over again. Do you not like the person you are when you're in a relationship or wonder why you keep repeating patterns in the type of person you date? Human beings are wired for connection, yet somehow the people we are closest with also seem to cause us the most pain.

I strive to be a therapist who is challenging and direct without being judgmental; is open-minded and encouraging of my clients to explore options in their lives that may be different than my own or others around them. I am someone who doesn't rush to diagnose and pathologize, but rather seeks to understand. I am not invested in the choices my clients make, I am invested in my clients making choices from a place of wholeheartedness. And specifically, I have a keen understanding of the intricacies of intimacy and sexuality within relationship to oneself and community. As long as we "fail forward" together, we are perfectly imperfect

Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
