Do you find yourself feeling worried regarding your family, relationship or work? Are you concerned about your child's behavior or your relationship with them? Many of my clients have considerable insight into their situation, but most find it difficult to change unproductive behavioral patterns or just "make" themselves feel better. I believe that change begins with knowing that no one is perfect...that every once in awhile we can all benefit from someone who will listen and guide us through our personal journeys.

I love using the skills I've developed to treat those going through trauma, depression, anxiety, mental illness, and other challenges. I have 5 years of experience working one-on-one with children and their families in an in-home environment. Though I work with adults as well, one of my niches is working with adolescents and teenagers.

I have years of professional training and experience in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, working with adolescents, adults and couples. I have a relational/interpersonal approach, focusing on reducing suffering and expanding ways of thinking and feeling. I believe in discovering your own way of living, true to your own values and goals. At the same time, I play an active role in sharing my observations, drawing your attention to things you might have missed, and at times challenging assumptions and ways of being if they are self defeating.

I treat individuals, couples, and families, spanning from childhood through adulthood. Therapy can be useful when we are experiencing life as painful, confusing or challenging, no matter the reason. Many live with feelings of sadness, loss, disorientation, isolation and diminished self-worth. Exploring those feelings and troubling symptoms in a safe environment with a caring, experienced professional, can serve to motivate us to identify patterns that stand in our way, be curious about and understand ourselves, all of which can lead to making meaningful and needed changes.

My methods are deeply rooted in empathy, aided by a caring heart and an analytical mind, as well as an ability to build strong relationships and enlist clients' cooperation in facing life’s journeys. I use plain and even colorful language to create an atmosphere of safety, trust, honesty, openness, understanding, and growth. More than 7 of my years in practice have been dedicated to in-home therapy services. I have seen first-hand how much more at ease my clients are when completing sessions at home. I add to that comfort by bringing open-minded kindness, honesty, and respect to all households.

You may be struggling through a painful time of life, but you’ve taken an important step by looking for support. In a productive therapeutic relationship, you'll begin to put words to your feelings and find comfort in the presence of a trained professional, you’ll get to know yourself better, and you’ll begin to find relief so that you can get moving again. I work toward that with you by listening carefully, being fully present and curious alongside you, and sharing insights as they emerge. I love my work and find great joy in helping people to feel more fully alive.

While their situations were unique, the people that I’ve worked with over the years often sought support when they felt lost, disconnected, or uninspired. For some, these feelings were lifelong. For others, they arose following a major loss or change. Therapy enables you to process and overcome these challenges, allowing you to rediscover your true self. I especially enjoy working with high-achieving individuals who hold high-stress and demanding positions and experience challenges with perfectionism, competitiveness, and feelings of jealousy and envy.

Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
