Although I enjoy working with a diverse range of issues my areas with extended expertise and special interest include the following; anxiety disorders, including OCD, panic disorder and separation anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideation, adjustment issues, self-esteem issues, grief and loss and anger.
I specialize in psychotherapy for children, adolescents and young adults ranging in age from 9 to 25 years. You may be looking for therapy for yourself, your child or for your family and if so you have come to the right place. My philosophy to therapy is that goals are met and behavior change is created through the combination of an open and honest relationship with your therapist, development of new skills and increased insight into problems. I work hard to create an environment where clients can feel safe, have the ability to be open and honest and feel supported while they work through what is often a difficult part of life.

I want you to imagine leaving your home in the morning, navigating the busy roads to work. You’re tired, barely focused and dreading the day ahead. You pull into the parking lot of your employer, taking a deep breath. You grab your work things and walk towards the office. You stop, frozen in the sea of mental waves, a thousand thoughts crashing into one another, unable to organize them. Everything stops for a moment, a beacon of clarity forms in the distance and you’re able to hear one calm thought. You ask yourself “am I on the right path?”

Just because you carry it well doesn’t mean it’s not heavy. If you are strong for others all the time, chances are you don’t have time to care for yourself. Let me provide you with a space and time where you are the priority. Where there are no risks of disappointing or upsetting me. Think of me like a conflict-free crash test dummy for your emotions. I’m not scared to sit with you in whatever it is that makes up your perfect storm. My purpose is to have your back and help you gain new perspective as you move into the future, not to judge how you’ve chosen to survive in the past.

I love talking to everyone who walks through my door. I find particular joy in empowering individuals who struggle with their self-esteem and confidence and validating individuals who feel shame or that their issue is too taboo. I want to give every person I meet the opportunity to unapologetically share their difficulties without fear of judgment.

Around 40% of the effectiveness of therapy is your relationship with your therapist! The next 30% is your own coping skill set. I pride myself in being a down to earth, relatable counselor, and I enjoy collaborating with my clients for their mental health care! With 18 years of well-rounded experience in the field, I use a combination of theories and techniques to first build a trusting and empowering relationship and then work together to reduce the suffering that comes from mental health issues or life's stressors. Are you feeling quarantined by the very walls you build for protection? Has past hurt left you feeling inadequate, unworthy and wondering why you are crying for no reason? Have you recently been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition and are noticing that you're more worried, sad, increasingly negative and critical? You used to be joyful. Getting out of bed used to be easy. You were optimistic. Life wasn't a chore. However, now you dilute and downplay good news with doses of your versions of reality.

My life-long passion is to help children, adolescents, and families heal. I work with children with a range of presenting concerns including attachment, behavior, mood and anxiety. I provide evidence-based treatments within a caring, trusting therapeutic relationship. I enjoy working with children that are considered "complex" including those who have had early developmental trauma and those who have behavioral difficulties that cause significant challenges. Helping parents to become more attuned and connected allows for healing across generations.

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
