*NEW CLIENTS ACCEPTED via TELEHEALTH* Ever feel like you have a way to do something, and though it does not work the way it seems like it should, you feel it “works for you?” Do you find that you have a way of behaving and struggle to break free from yourself? I find that humans act in patterns. We think about a problem and act in a way that is the most comfortable to us and tend to repeat these patterns regardless of the result. I work with people living with depression, anxiety, trauma, anger concerns, separation/loss/grief issues, and people coping with discrimination.

Whether you're feeling depressed, anxious, hopeless, or irritable, making that first call for help can be hard. You desperately want to feel better, but you're afraid of what it will be like to share your thoughts with a therapist. I understand. My guiding principles are respect, appreciation of differences, and a balance between acceptance and change. I listen carefully and center the therapy around your needs.

There comes a time in your life when you decide that you want something different. It may be a change in behavior, your way of thinking, or how to approach situations or others. I am here to be your impetus for change. Every human being has the power for greatness if they choose to embrace it. My goal is to help you evoke a lighter heart, perhaps fix what's broken, tackle what weighs you down, gain a different perspective, and unlock the greatest version of yourself.

Immediate openings! Congratulations on taking the first step to living your best life. Change can be scary, but with the right support, it can open doors to a life you never imagined. I have been in the therapy world for about 8 years now and through this journey, I have learned that there is not a single story that is the same. Therapy should be about the individual and meeting them where they’re at. I utilize an eclectic range of therapy modalities to help you identify your starting point and also identify what life will look like at the end of your therapy journey. I will start where you are at and we can work together as a team.

Current openings with clinicians credentialed with BCBS. The ideal client who I work with therapeutically is motivated and desires change. This client values the therapeutic relationship while also working toward success quickly. This client should be excited, even if a little bit anxious, about gaining valuable insight into themselves and their place in their life. As far as couples/marriage counseling is concerned, couples should be motivated to stay together and not simply stop off at therapy before divorce. Couples should be willing to work hard and look at themselves as individuals as well as a family.

Currently in my practice I use an evidenced based type of therapy that has been embraced for years. Compassion based therapy provides the client with a total acceptance and validation for their well being. People who experience them may struggle to feel relieved, reassured or safe. Research suggests that a specialized affect regulation system (or systems) underpins feelings of reassurance, safeness and well being. It is believed to have evolved with attachment and in particular, the ability to register and respond with calming and a sense of well being to being cared for.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
