I understand that each person has their own story that has shaped them into who they are and what they are experiencing. I meet every client where they are in their story and help guide them to where they would like to be. My goal is to help adolescents and young adults reach their fullest potential by supporting, educating, and instilling hope in them and their future. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive space that allows them to explore themselves, their strengths, and their goals.

It is extremely important that my client's feel comfortable with me and my work, otherwise therapy becomes a task, not something rewarding or nurturing. Teaching clients how to validate each feeling/emotion, how to sit with feelings and not run away from them is what I do best! I'd love to ask you why is it you may tend to cycle in the same energies and what would happen if you stepped out of it? Would love to hear your response! The way we think affects how we feel and then affects how we behave. I believe that every tear drop has a voice, if your tears had a voice what would they be saying?

I recognize that coming into counseling can be one of the most challenging things a person can do for themselves. In my work I strive to meet every child, teen, adult, and parent where they are in order to be most effective in communicating. I take a collaborative approach in working towards an individual’s goals and along the way can provide education, support, and a new perspective. In my work I have used empirically supported theories to treat depression, anxiety, and OCD in both children/adolescents and adults. My hope for every client is that they feel empowered and able to take on life’s challenges.

You may have suffered greatly internally and contemplated making a change. When the time comes, the risk to remain tight in a bud can be more painful than the risk it takes to blossom. If you are ready to improve your self-esteem, or seek healing from trauma, or overcome a depressive episode, or rebuild healthy relationships, I am here to guide and walk with you in your journal of growth and transformation. As a clinical and research psychologist and former assistant professor, I actively incorporate 14 years of clinical experience and research evidence working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples in my work with clients.

Brittany believes that an extremely powerful shift happens when we choose to open up and explore the multiple facets that make us who we are and that by looking into counseling, you have already begun that process. Working together with her clients, Brittany uses humanistic approaches and tailors her strategies and interventions based on trust, readiness and specific needs. She deeply believes that potential and power lies within each individual and that by slowing down and becoming curious about the patterns of our thoughts, behaviors and relationships, we can not only overcome the struggles we face, but live more authentic.

All of us develop patterns of behavior based on survival instincts from the moment we are born. Ideally, as we mature our survival skills would mature as well and that's often not the case. A behavior that was successful in the past can hurt us in the present and keep us repeating the same self limiting patterns over and over. Everything we do has elements of relationship. Professional, romantic, platonic, familial, athletic, and academic relationships make up our societal existence. By learning how to be in relationship with ourselves we learn how to be in relationship with others.

Have you found yourself asking any of the following questions to friends or family members about your child: "I don't know what's up with them." "Did I do something wrong?" "They won't talk to me like they used to." Despite your best efforts, it seems like your child is just stuck in a hard place. As a parent, it can be intimidating to reach out and find a counselor for your child, because you want what is best for them. You're looking for someone that will connect with them, and walk with them through any stress, anxiety, and transitions they are experiencing.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
