I know sometimes it feels like no one can help you. That you are too much, too dark, and too broken to be helped. Sometimes trauma can manifest by cutting, eating disorders, depression, chaos, and a real struggle to maintain friendships. It can be hard to even picture what a stable and consistent life would look like, but it's still something you want. Chaotic feelings feel like they take over you and you struggle to make it through each day. You want to live but still feel suicidal. This is all normal for someone with trauma, someone who has been through abuse, someone who has experienced broken relationships and even toxic ones.

Our clinical focus is a "hybrid" approach combining Dialectical and Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Relational/Experiential therapy, primarily for the adolescent and emerging adult, but also working with adults, families and couples. Our clients struggle with regulating emotions, distress tolerance, core emptiness (confusion about oneself), as well as interpersonal conflict with frequent emotional chaos. Our time-limited, solution-focused technique is often sought to augment a person's existing individual therapy. Our approach is also effective in treating depression, self-injury, anxiety - focusing on coping skills. We are comprised of 4 licensed clinicians offering both individual, couple and group therapy.

Life can be hard, and no one knows this better than adolescents, young adults, and the families who love and support them. Intense emotions; urges to engage in impulsive behaviors; navigating social situations and the stress of school; difficulty getting along with parents; the politics of Snapchat, etc! The instability of this time of life offers both challenge and opportunity. Therapy can support young people to harness the chaotic yet formative nature of this time as a catalyst for lasting wellness and growth: Explore one's identity; develop effective coping strategies, practice interpersonal relationship, heal trauma, and more.

When the challenges of life knock us down and the chances of any light seem like they are nowhere to be found, it can be a lonely place to be at. I believe that it is important to know that we are not alone in our journey, and that help is right here. No matter where you may be in life, I want to be a part of your healing journey. I step into the mess with you and help you find that light again that you have been searching for. I am the kind of therapist that wants to help my clients in any way I can. I believe in giving clients not only the grace that they need, but also giving them hard truth in their journey.

I love working with people who are struggling with worry and sadness and are looking for a safe space to reconnect with themselves. Clients I work well with often identify as an empath or peacekeeper. They have an honorable capacity for deep thinking and generosity towards others. On the flip side, these strengths can leave people feeling different and drained. We would work well together if you are interested in learning how to turn that empathy inward to ground, feel your feelings, and use the mind to reassure yourself as you make brave, new choices.

I work as an eclectic therapist, using client centered therapy, family systems therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques. I provide a non-judjmental empathetic approach to counseling. When working with families; It is my belief that if one person in a system makes a change then the whole family system will change. In my work with individuals, I assist my clients in determining underlying fears that may be causing anxiety and depression; so that they can begin the healing process. I hope to empower each of my clients so that they can overcome the obstacles and struggles in their lives.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
