Much of my social work experience has been in the hospital setting, working with high acuity clients who exhibit suicidal ideation and are at risk of hurting themselves. I recognize the hardest step is often deciding to schedule an initial appointment with a therapist. My focus is working with children, adolescents, and young adults ranging from 10 to 25 years of age (though I also enjoy working with adults) who experience depression, suicidal ideation, self-harming behavior, anxiety, and trauma-related issues. My goal for clients is to seek connection and foster curiosity to reduce disconnection and isolation.

Building and living a life that we feel has meaning, laughter, & connection is not easy. When we don't have these things life can feel unpredictable, unsafe, & hard to face. I believe that on a human level we all want to feel like we matter, have purpose,& other humans who understand us. I have experienced feeling like my life was not worth continuing & a counselor supported me in creating a life that I am proud of. This is where much of my passion comes from to support others in doing the same. I have been supporting others for over 10 years to learning how to foster healthy relationships, coping skills, communication,& self love.

My name is Michelle Wright and I am the owner of Beacon of Hope Counseling, LLC. My past experiences and hope to help others led me to the field of counseling and creating Beacon of Hope Counseling. I have learned through the years life is filled with joyous moments and then periods of difficulty and uncertainty. When experiencing life's barriers one can feel anxious, stuck, overwhelmed, depressed and even hopeless. Past events and trauma can also become barriers in us being our best selves. In these moments counseling can be helpful in gaining insight and learning ways to best cope.

I have been working with at-risk youth since 2004. While earning my BA in Psychology at UCCS, I worked in a residential treatment facility, learning the ropes of being a front line staff. While earning my MA in Clinical Psychology, also at UCCS, I worked with middle school youth at a local school. Following graduation, I returned to residential as a therapist working almost exclusively with sexually abusive youth. I have presented research on this topic and many others across the country and in Canada, and have earned my Full Operating Treatment Provider from the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB).

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom" (Anais Nin). You know when it's time to make a change - whether the struggle is depression, anxiety, past trauma, or perhaps a painful relationship - there comes a tipping point when you are ready to make that first step toward hope.

Hello old friend, we may have never met, but I've seen your pain. The journey from suffering to satisfaction can be a long, uncertain, and winding road. It’s never set. But it's almost always worth it. If you’re ready, I’d like to share that journey with you. I may be able to help you find the peace and freedom that seem so tough to find. If you’re ready to explore your story with me. It’s probably much easier than you think. I can handle the neurobiology and therapeutic interventions, you bring a story and an open mind/heart.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
