“Change” is possible, but it is never straightforward especially when we find ourselves in the middle of it. As human beings, our entire lives are inherently developmental in nature. The complex process by which we may courageously begin to show up differently in our lives, and even in ourselves can be incredibly difficult to navigate at times. We are not meant to accomplish this on our own, and this is especially true after any sustained trauma. Everyone—regardless of age—is deserving of a space devoted to their growth and recovery. I am a firm believer there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of being human!

Addiction, trauma, grief, depression and anxiety can be crippling to experience. But even worse, they can be lonely and stigmatizing, causing those who suffer to feel distant and disconnected from everyone else - even though these disorders are very much a part of human existence. In fact, science tells us that most of us suffer through at least one of these disorders at some point in our lives. As you review my pwebsite, the central message I want you to hear is that you are not alone, and I can help you deal with these overwhelming and isolating issues.

I view the counseling process as forming a trusting relationship with you to explore the nature of who you are, why you are, & the nature of the problems you face. I use an eclectic approach including a variety of counseling theories to meet individual needs. I believe there is purpose in behavior which is shaped by positive, negative, and traumatic experiences. Throughout the counseling process we will explore how negative thoughts & experiences have reinforced the perception of oneself & worldview, and how to replace negative thinking patterns/behaviors to increase self-worth leading to fulfilling relationships and connections.

Dealing with trauma and past hurts, struggling with work, relationships, or addiction, managing depression & anxiety or to better understand one's gender identity or sexuality - it isn't easy to address any of these things. I see therapy as a safe, judgment-free, shame-free, and confidential space, where you are free to vent, confide, cry, discuss, imagine, find strength, and be empowered. Most importantly, therapy is a place for hope to come alive, to learn new coping skills, to achieve personal growth, and to discover you are strong, valuable, and greater than any struggle you might have. Change is possible!

Overwhelmed by the stress of getting through daily life? You may have pushed things away for years and finally realize you can’t move forward without doing the work. Step into the room. It’s a quiet, safe, focused space where we’ll help you discover your true essence. You’ll learn that you’re not your behavior, that you’re not your trauma. We’ll help you separate what happened to that part of you back then, versus what happened to the essential you. We’ll help you develop the skills, strength, resilience, balance, and self-confidence you need to live the well-nourished life.

Do you feel overwhelmed, disconnected or unmotivated? Have you noticed changes in how you're engaging in your life and want to make meaningful change? This year has been a challenge for all of us, on every level. Having to redefine relationships, work, school and parenting has led to feelings of stress/anxiety, self-doubt, loneliness and depression. I believe therapy can help you identify and change patterns in your life that are not working and build insight and confidence in coping with these challenges. I am passionate about working with adolescents, young adults and adult women and provide an inclusive space to share.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
