Though we may know that healing is nonlinear, we often feel pressured to hide our messy reality beneath a socially acceptable mask. We may internalize the “should”s and “shouldn’t”s and find ourselves lost in a sea of well-intentioned platitudes, unsure how to navigate life’s twists and turns. My approach is to meet you where you are and walk with you so that you don’t have to do it alone.

We live in a world where we are expected to do it all, perfectly, and without struggling. We are constantly comparing ourselves to others and we declare ourselves "not good enough." These feelings tend to dictate our response to those around us, so that we are really just reacting to what is going on behind the scenes without even realizing it. I believe that a lot of the issues that present on the surface -- family issues, addiction, depression, and anxiety -- can be treated by focusing on overcoming shame, negative self-talk, and trauma. If this can be done, then the chances of improving your quality of life increases.

It’s shocking how many people believe that suffering is normal. They muddle through life doing the very best they can, putting out crisis after crisis, not even recognizing that there’s a better way. It's impossible to get a handle on things when you feel like the world is on fire. You're panicked, you're depressed, relationships suffer, work suffers, your relationship with yourself suffers- there isn't a piece of your life it doesn't touch. Every ounce of energy you have goes to trying to keep it all from collapsing. IF you sleep, you wake up and you start again- doing it all over the next day. This isn't life, this is survival.

No matter where you are in life, you are never alone. You will discover this through the relationship that we will build together. You are important and you matter, regardless of your story. “The rough must always accompany the smooth. Without one or the other one learns nothing about oneself.” It can be difficult to navigate out of rough times. Relationship problems, depression, anxiety, work stress, or family issues can impact our lives in ways we could not imagine. It can feel overwhelming and as if there is not a way out. My hope is that we can work together through the healing process and start the voyage toward a better you.

We find ourselves feeling anxious, depressed, angry, and panicky we have no idea why. Negative emotions, feelings and behaviors are generally caused by unresolved earlier experiences that are pushing you in the wrong directions. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process completely the experiences that are causing problems and store them with appropriate emotions in the brain, and to include new ones that are needed to guide you in positive ways in the future. The inappropriate emotions, beliefs, and body sensations will be discarded. Leaving you with the emotions, understanding, and perspectives that lead to healthy and useful behavior.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
