I am a Child and Family Mental Health Therapist "I believe that each of us has the desire and ability to be happy." I have many years of experience working with early childhood trauma and severe, persistent mental illness, varying from ages of 5 years to 70+. My goal is to empower and advocate for positive change within you, as the individual, and the system as a whole. The place that we will create together is a safe and judgement free space. I work through an Existential foundation, to help those I work with seek meaning and purpose, with skills built from experience with Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, all within the context of a trauma-informed approach.

My scope of work with clients includes navigating challenging emotions such as anxiousness and depression, building on social skills, and healing from traumatic events. I work with a variety of clients including school-aged children and adults. As Psychologist Ashley Warner states, "Beneath every behavior, there is a feeling. And beneath every feeling, there is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom." I believe it is through therapy we can work to understand what the deeper meaning is behind behaviors and find solutions to address the manifesting need.

I have experience working with adults and children. In my work with children, I have helped families address ADHD, anxiety, adjustment disorders, grief, trauma and attachment concerns. In my work with adults, I have guided persons in working through depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, trauma and relationship concerns. We can work to increase your awareness of the unconscious motivations and historical explanations for your current patterns. We can also utilize techniques to help you change your negative thinking, manage stress, improve your mood, and enhance the quality of your relationships.

Clients who seek my guidance often yearn for liberation from the burdens of anxiety, stress, depression, or interpersonal strife. Their aspiration extends beyond symptom relief; they desire insight into the underlying causes. Many discover that their surface behaviors merely scratch the surface of their issues and are on a quest for genuine transformation and healing.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
