My work with adolescents, families, and adults spans over twenty years. I believe in the innate strengths within people while also appreciating the need for assistance during the challenges and losses presented throughout life. Working from a relational model and believing that the present moment offers potential for new growth and healing, I am honored to be present for each client as they achieve their desired goals. By co-creating a therapeutic relationship based on trust and authenticity, I assist individuals in reaching their highest potentials.

Do you ever find yourself facing the same challenges, repeating patterns, or feeling stuck in your life? It’s like there’s a hidden script influencing your actions and emotions, and you can’t quite put your finger on it. This could feel like lack of self confidence, feeling sad or fearful, relationship challenges, or physical pain. I work with couples and individuals to understand how past relationships and events influence the challenges of today. By understanding the “how”, we cultivate a profound self-awareness that empowers you to find new ways of being and feeling that better serve you.

I believe strongly in the resilience of people, and that a healthy therapeutic relationship can promote trust, healing, and personal growth. I believe that successful therapy is predicated on having a strong therapeutic alliance; the connection and collaborative relationship between the client and therapist. Taking a strength-based perspective, I listen deeply and reflectively to sustain a non-judgmental and safe environment. I am passionate about helping clients fully process past experiences and thrive in relationships with themselves, others, and the world around them.

Welcome. I'm glad you made the decision to seek out help and begin the process of feeling better. For many, this first step is difficult. It's important to find a therapist who is a good match in terms of style and therapeutic approach. My style of therapy is a collaborative process in which we work together to identify what you want your life to be like and how best to make that happen. I work to provide a nonjudgmental space in which clients are better able to discuss difficult topics, keeping an open mind throughout the therapy process.

We live in a traumatic world and the effects of this trauma are a heavy burden on our backs. We carry many things with us in our lives. This stuff clutters our closets, makes it hard to walk around our basements and gets in the way of our progress. I help my clients use images, objects, and memories to call forth their stories. Then I support them in learning the skills to retell these stories in a healthier way and to let go of the burden of trauma.

My goal is to help you live and act with integrity, increasing ability to respond - while maintaining compassion for the changes that take support, time & practice. My experience lends itself to those touched by abandonment, childhood traumas & addiction - be it those trying to recover from addictions themselves, or those affected by another's. I do not believe in 'fixing' people, but rather dismantling the myths of being broken. Experience shows that our greatest challenges are often unsprouted seeds to the most potent strengths. Our task is to usher that growth.

In all my work with clients I provide a warm, safe and respectful environment based on collaboration and curiosity. When people contact me with concerns about themselves or their children, they often feel stuck or at a loss about how to proceed. They may be concerned about issues of self-esteem, satisfaction in relationships, or a teenager's emotional ups and downs at home or in school. I use an active and interactive style in helping clients gain new ways to understand themselves and new tools to address problematic patterns of thinking, feeling, or behaving.

My purpose is to help individuals and groups become empowered to emerge as better versions of themselves, who are better able to reach their own goals. Healing and growth takes place in a safe and secure environment where we can cooperatively seek to understand your challenges and who you are in relation to them. I work well with adolescents, emerging adults, and established yet struggling adults.

I am an experienced clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience in clinical practice. I have an empathic, non-judgmental style, and work to gently and clearly understand the feelings and experience of the person who is sitting in front of me. The basis for my work is psychodynamic therapy, a form of "talk therapy" in which the roots of present-day issues are identified by exploring earlier experiences that may be related. Through this processing of early experiences, emotional resolution of the experiences can occur. Through this therapeutic process, my patients live progressively happier, more contented lives.

My practice is dedicated to helping clients deepen their capacity for self awareness and personal agency. As part of our work together I help clients explore and develop insight into unconscious processes, repetitive patterns of behavior, and relational difficulties to understand what gets in the way of living meaningfully and authentically while reaching desired goals. Drawing from psychoanalytic, relational, and mindfulness approaches, I work collaboratively with clients to facilitate a safe therapeutic space conducive to increased intimacy, curiosity, and creativity while building on strengths derived from their unique life experiences.

Seeking therapy is a sign of personal strength. Often people who engage in therapy are actually doing well in life, but would like to do better in one area or another. It takes awareness in our lives and courage to be able to reach out for help. I strive to put people at ease in building the therapeutic relationship. I also greatly value individual differences and approach each client with an open-minded and non-judgmental stance. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of a successful experience in therapy.

A wise doctor once wrote: "It is more important to understand the person who has an illness than the illness a person has." This is even truer for emotional problems than physical ones. Likewise, without understanding the context of a person's life and family, past and present -- one cannot really begin to help the person. I have worked for many years with young men and women of all ages with addictions, family and relationship issues, and the universal challenges of depression and anxiety. Certainly there are commonalities among the problems they present, but it is the uniqueness of each of my patients that leads to change.

Each person enters times in their lives where they benefit from additional support. Personal transitions, loss, stress, toxic relationships, oppressive systems, pandemics... Lots of things occur around us that make us feel out of control, helpless, and overwhelmed. We often experience these traumas while still reliving patterns and experiences from the past, making it hard to see a way through. If you are looking for support, feel ready to identify some of these patterns, dig in and move forward, then we might be a good fit!

I help anxious and overwhelmed individuals navigate life stress, flourish in life transitions, and heal from painful experiences. You may be a young adult navigating a new life phase, you may be experiencing grief and loss, or you may be working through trauma. You may simply be looking to shift habits that are negatively affecting your life. All of these needs can be challenging to face alone, which is why working together in the context of a therapeutic alliance can be so helpful.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
