Eating disorders have the highest mortality of all psychiatric diagnoses. I'm a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. You aren't sick because you want to be (see Neurobiology.) The change we need to live healthy can seem more difficult than the pain. The emptiness of escapism, whether through restriction, drugs, alcohol, food, etc. obscures your potential. If it's not dangerous, you don't have to run. When you practice avoidance, you also avoid experiences producing self-trust, self-confidence and self-esteem. If you want to practice bravery, I'm here. I teach skills and assign homework. I'm willing to work as hard as you are.

So, you've been trying to be strong and look the part, huh? You're pretty effective in many aspects of your life, but you tend to get triggered when it comes to personal and professional relationships. And let's not forget about that whole "head of the family or I am the only one who can do it" thing... because where has it actually gotten you? Your trust in relationships is a bit shaky, and you've been pretending that everything's alright. But deep down, you know you're silently struggling with self-doubt, anxiousness, low self-esteem, grief, or just plain fear of the unknown. Doesn't that pretense get tiring?

Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.`` - Khalil Gibran My ideal clients are willing to look at the somatic elements of who they are, become more mindful of their internal sensations and return to the present moment. They'll begin to understand that change can happen, that they can become unstuck, and find healing and growth. I specialize in populations who are struggling with depression, relationship and family conflict, addiction, anxiety and stress, trauma related disorders, grief and loss, self esteem, and life transitions. I work with adults, couples, and families to meet goals and figure out how to “do life” with the hand you’ve been dealt in the most productive way possible. Some of the evidenced based approaches I use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Therapy. These approaches paired with a solid therapeutic rapport result in clients reaching goals and seeing actual results from counseling.

Often the weight of the world can feel all-consuming and everyday tasks can come with fear and avoidance. Perhaps even the thought of reaching out to begin therapy ignites feelings of dread. However, deep down, you know you deserve better – because you do! I would be honored to navigate the anxiety, the stress, the sadness, and more with you. Together, we will build upon the strengths you already hold inside, and work to understand the thoughts and feelings that come with everything else.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
