Change is an inevitable part of life that can sometimes be scary, anxiety inducing, and difficult to cope with. Because change is often fraught with unknowns, I believe a strong therapeutic relationship – one that is built on trust, empathy, compassion, and non-judgement – is essential to the healing process. My focuses include working with adults of all ages to address a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, and grief and loss. I also have experience working with individuals diagnosed with chronic or terminal illnesses, as well as their family members and caregivers.

I am here to help people on their journey, wherever they are in life. I believe in empowering people to make good choices for themselves. I work well with clients suffering from depression and/or anxiety and want solid positive coping skills to help deal with stressors. I use CBT and trauma-informed care, as well as an Adlerian perspective to understand the importance of early childhood experiences on personality and belief structure. I believe mindfulness matters. Taking care of you is important!

My ideal population is adults struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, or substance use - however I believe that everyone deserves to have a therapist who is dedicated to them, and I would never turn away a client unless their needs were out of my scope of practice. My ideal client is someone who is motivated for therapy and is willing to learn.

These days, many of the people with whom I form a therapeutic relationship are those who have been unsatisfied with prior therapy efforts. In addition, I often work with mental health and medical professionals and their families, as well as persons employed in academia. That said, I enjoy sorting out all sorts of relationship difficulties and the underlying personality issues. In terms of patient populations, I work with individual adults and couples, upset teens and young adults. I am a fully trained psychoanalyst, as well, so I am comfortable with very intimate work, often using the couch. Commitment is a two-way street.

I currently have early morning openings for telehealth on Mon & Thurs! Understanding the unsettling feelings, emotions, and thoughts that you may be experiencing can be an incredibly complex task to grapple with on your own. It can feel even more daunting when you think of how to try and explain what is going on to someone else. I strive to provide a supportive and collaborative environment to assist you in taking the time to explore the things you seek to understand. My goal is to help you build your “mental tool box” with effective coping skills, confidence, and self-awareness to tackle any obstacle that is thrown your way.

Hi there, I'm Sara! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who specializes in providing trauma-informed therapy to adults and teens who reside in Pennsylvania. Most of my clients come to me because they're feeling stuck in the past or feel like they can't "get over" something terrible that happened to them. It seems like no matter what they do, they can't move on. They can see how their trauma is affecting their mood, self-esteem, anxiety, and even their relationships, but feel helpless to change it. If this sounds familiar, I might be able to help!

I believe that, despite our differences, we all want the same thing in life....to be happy. We have our own definitions of what that means, but many common elements appear across the spectrum. I love being able to guide the process of discovery with my clients, to help identify where their attention is best spent. I believe we all have the innate wisdom to make sound decisions for ourselves but sometimes are too close to the situation to be able to trust our instincts. I see therapy as an opportunity to explore options, and ask new challenging questions.

I work to establish a supportive and non-judgemental space for clients to focus on healing and connection. I work to emphasize collaboration while recognizing the client as the expert of their own experience. I support my clients with active listening, affirmation, validation, and honesty. We will work together to build upon existing attributes and coping mechanisms and I will work to encourage self-compassion while developing new skills for the present and future. This may include working on setting healthy boundaries, improving communication skills, and/or identifying negative self-talk.

As a licensed professional counselor and a board-certified music therapist, I've worked with adults across the age spectrum for 15 years on chronic and progressive illnesses, death and dying, pre-bereavement, and grief. When facing such significant life transitions, it is important that all involved individuals have a compassionate space for processing their experiences and to plan for the future. Using a combination of motivational interviewing, humanism, and Gestalt therapy, we will explore avenues for moving forward in ways helping you feel empowered and emboldened, ready to face the coming journey and the meaning it may bring.

I'm passionate about working with folks who share any of my identities and are seeking a therapist with similar lived experience. My main areas of interest include gender identity, disability/illness, autism, sexuality and relationships (including non-monogamy, kink, and sex work), and supporting other therapists and academics/scholars. I'm invested in serving other people living with Pentad Super Syndrome, as well. Those who are drawn to working with me often identify as radicals, misfits, outsiders, activists, and cycle breakers.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Pittsburgh?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
