I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor specializing in the treatment of anxiety or worry, low self esteem and relationship difficulties. I also enjoy working with issues related to identity, acculturation and life adjustments. More generally, I provide psychotherapy to those who are dissatisfied with themselves, their relationships or their career and who aspire to lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Psychotherapy leads to better self-knowledge, to making healthier life choices and to greater self acceptance and confidence, while reducing uncomfortable symptoms that interfere in daily living.

To mindfully awaken is to become conscious in the here and now while integrating all of our experiences before this moment in time. This practice of living courageously, authentically, with non-judgmental awareness, while embracing our worthiness, helps us live a fuller life. Specializing in somatic psychotherapy with adults, my therapeutic approach draws from Somatic Experiencing, Attachment Theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, DBT-informed therapy, as well as the research of Brené Brown.

You made it! You may not feel like you’re making it right now-and that’s totally okay. However, take a moment to reflect that you’ve made it to THIS moment in search for hope, understanding, growth, and relief. You’ve already made it through frustration (scrolling through hundreds of strangers faces to find a therapist), hopelessness, sadness, anxiety, trauma, and much more. I want to walk beside you through the difficult feelings you’ve been experiencing to help you create a life that you don’t just make it through, but actually ENJOY!

My clients may struggle with trauma; relationships and intimacy; sexuality; gender, or other identity exploration. More concretely, their therapeutic work might mean develop deeper connections with friends and intimate partners, learning how to process feelings of shame resulting from harm done to or by someone, or exploring self-expression within and outside of social roles. I am deeply passionate about creating and maintaining a space for people to align with their most authentic selves, especially while navigating the often accompanying grief, and celebrating the empowerment that we are sure to find along the way.

Grief, trauma and systemic oppression have increasingly become visible and universal experiences affecting individuals, couples, families and communities. I began my career working with the survivors of intimate partner violence and individuals/families grappling with cancer and death. These experiences have informed my practice working with individuals, couples and families dealing with loss, grief, trauma, anxiety/depression, major life changes, chronic illness, abuse and relational distress.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
