I have been a practicing therapist for over twenty-five years. I spent a number of years working with children, adolescents and families in a community-based agency. I specialize in working with females 16+ years of age on a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harming behavior, and poor self esteem.
The constant pressures of daily life, particularly during a pandemic, can leave us feeling overwhelmed, scared, and alone. As we try to navigate our way through issues involving school, work, relationships, life transitions, and grief and loss, we may feel so hopeless that we feel as if we cannot go on like this anymore. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I will provide support and guidance to help you identify unhealthy thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so that you can make positive and sustainable changes to improve your quality of life.

Every person is inherently worthy and valuable simply through their existence, and that includes you! As true as that statement is, it can be next to impossible to recognize your own worth when living within a system that marginalizes, exploits, or just doesn't value you the way you deserve. I aim to work with LGBTQ+ community members and individuals with disabilities, replacing harmful imposed narratives with ones of strength and power. While we can't do much about systemic oppression while in the therapy office, we can do our best to resist its impacts on our self-worth and mental health!

For some of us our internal dialogue with ourselves could be described as anything but kind. We can be critical, self-deprecating, or devaluing of our experience due to past traumas that have informed a part of who we are, shame or guilt associated with our identity, or fear of experiencing ourselves as selfish. At times we can be so angry with ourselves for feeling that we are trapped in a cycle of attempting to do enough for others to finally have permission to be ourselves. This anger can give way to burn out, isolation, depression, and resignation. It can feel impossible to break out of that space.

So many things can distance and distract us from experiencing meaningful relationships with ourselves and with others. Depression and anxiety, grief and loss, challenging life transitions and traumatic events can make our strengths and inner resources temporarily unavailable. Therapy can connect us back to these strengths and foster growth and healing. It can provide a safe space to share things that may feel overwhelming and hard to talk about and help us to feel safe, affirmed and encouraged in creating a fulfilling, authentic life.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
