I see clients in California and MN for telehealth psychotherapy. In my practice, I help people overcome their personal obstacles to change and get unstuck. Together, we identify those issues which we can change and those that we can accept. Over the past 30 years, I have helped people create healthy movement in their lives and to develop a balanced design for living that can serve as a foundation for years to come. I strive to provide an atmosphere that is respectful and safe. It is very important to me that clients know that they have a voice in the treatment process so that the treatment is individualized to meet their needs.

My therapeutic approach tends to be eclectic, pulling from various Psychodynamic theoretical frameworks including Internal Family Systems, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, as well as DBT and CBT.
Sharing our inner experiences with someone can often feel frightening, which is exactly why I place such an importance on connection and acceptance in the therapeutic process. I aim to create a safe environment that will invite my clients to delve deeper into their personal narrative, as I truly believe we are not built to process emotions alone. As humans, we all have a propensity to grow and become our true selves, unfortunately we aren’t always gifted with the circumstances to allow it. I am passionate about creating a space for not only self-discovery and self acceptance, but to allow clients to feel seen, heard, and valued.

My practice mainly consists of practical and effective approaches stemming from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy.
Life can be challenging, and difficult moments can leave us feeling stressed, depressed, anxious, angry, and at times, all of those emotions at once. Psychotherapy can allow you to explore and identify unhealthy patterns in your life. Through this process, new coping skills occur so that you can feel better and healthier. My focus is on older adolescents, young adults, couples, and families who struggle balancing responsibilities, healthy relationships, and individualized goals. I work with a multicultural lens, and effective therapeutic approaches to ensure your values are honored, and goals are accomplished.

I’m certified in DBT and use a schema therapy approach.
Despite our inherent need to search for meaning in life, none of us were given an instructional handbook on how to achieve happiness and well-being at birth. Even under the best of circumstances it is difficult to cultivate inner peace while navigating the difficulties of social expectations, residual childhood experiences, emotional regulation and forming social connections. When trauma is added to the equation, life becomes a constant act of coping instead of growing. If you feel like your journey has become wrought with indecision, impulsivity, or emptiness; it might be time to invite someone to walk alongside you.

Life is a four-letter word. There are situations that arise in our lives that cause us to feel alone, misunderstood, or fearful. Sometimes, we need assistance to navigate through these situations and find a healthier way of managing the emotions that may arise. The goal is to find the space to explore and work through the unwanted emotions with a person with whom you can trust. My goal is to be that person and work together to develop a way for you to breathe better. Life is a four-letter word; but, so is Hope.

Schema Therapy

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
