I'm also trained to work with parents in the perinatal and postpartum periods.
Not all therapy is the same. Maybe you have been to therapy before, and while the therapist was well meaning you didn’t quite feel understood and seen. At times, you may have felt dismissed- even if slightly—as though something essential about your experience was being overlooked. Not the facts of your life, but the deeper emotional reality underneath them. The part of you carrying old hurts, difficult emotions, conflicting feelings, or questions about who you are and what you need. You can feel these experiences shaping your life, even if they're hard to put into words. And you want to get the heart of it- to heal and feel good.

Why me? Why did/do I have to experience ____, be born with _____, and ultimately live with _____???? You've probably tried everything you know; positivity, praying, ignoring or burying the feelings, talking about the experience, maladaptive behaviors (shopping, sex, substances, ANYTHING to keep your mind off of what is), and you may have even tried therapy. Either way, you're here now which means something in you believes it is time and you are ready for positive change. You decide the destination or goal and I walk alongside you on the journey. Through reiki and/or therapy, we can get where you want to be. Healthy..why NOT you?

You’ve been holding it all together — work, kids, relationships — and it’s wearing you down. You keep pushing through, but day in and day out you’re exhausted. Maybe life is shifting and you're not sure what's next. Therapy can help you put some of that weight down and feel like you again! As women, we often put ourselves last but that only works for so long. Sooner or later, something gives. When you’re carrying so much, it’s no wonder you feel numb, frustrated, or like you can’t catch your breath. You don’t have to keep running on empty. You deserve to feel grounded and at peace.

Many of the people I work with are carrying a lot. They feel stretched thin, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, stress, burnout, and difficulty setting boundaries often bring them to therapy. Together, we'll slow things down, make sense of what's been getting in your way, sort through what's yours to own and what isn't, and identify practical steps that help you move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

My name is Laura Clayton and I am an LPC here in South Carolina. By looking at both conscious and unconscious beliefs, you can choose more adaptive beliefs & combine them with new behaviors which creates a whole new reality. I also understand how past traumas impact how you approach the present moment, and will address these root issues. While insight and self-understanding are important, deep understanding of one's self does not always translate into behavioral change. I combine process and insight oriented psychotherapy with problem- solving, practical, CBT interventions that are done between sessions to maximize treatment.

I work with teens, young adults, and adults who often look like they’re doing fine on the outside, but internally feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns of overthinking, self-doubt, or control. Many of the people I work with are high-achieving, sensitive, and pretty hard on themselves. Anxiety, perfectionism, obsessive thinking, body image concerns, or complicated relationships with food may be part of what’s going on underneath.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
