I am a clinical psychologist providing counseling to couples, families, and adults. My services are offered to the greater Charlotte area and with telehealth in South Carolina. I provide treatment for depression, anxiety, stress, medical problems, attention and focus problems and grief and loss issues. I completed my doctorate at the University of South Carolina. I am passionate about my work with clients and enjoy learning and developing new skills and techniques to support them in managing the complexity of their daily lives.

I have been a practicing Psychologist in the Charleston area since 1997. My office is located three blocks from the College of Charleston. Many of my client's are college students who display symptoms of anxiety and depression associated with difficulties adjusting to college life. I have been a college professor for many years, so I relate well to the challenges of college. It takes bravery and courage to seek help and I find that those who engage in treatment benefit when they put effort into developing skills to manage their emotional self.

My goal as a therapist is to assist clients in finding their own path to improve overall health and quality of life through a greater understanding of self, relationships and happiness. I have experience with trauma, anxiety, depression, loss/grief, life changes and personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorder. I strive to help my clients overcome areas of difficulty by working together as a team in the comfort of a private practice setting utilizing evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions as well as holistic styles of treatment for individuals, couples and families. My name is Dena Ewing and I am a board certified art therapist that specializes in trauma therapy and somatic practices to resolve emotional pain and suffering. Many people I treat have often tried different therapies in the past with limited success. My approach to resolving long standing anxiety, trauma and/or depression is by taking a "bottom up" approach, meaning we work with gently connecting to the body first to let it inform the next steps in healing.

My sense of humor is big part part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. In addition to counseling, I also provide life coaching for clients who want to make changes but aren't sure where to start. I work particularly well with clients who are nervous or skeptical about the idea of counseling. I realize that therapy can be a significant expense, so I run my practice as efficiently as possible. All scheduling, forms, notes, and billing are online, so we can make the best use of our time together.

I have been EMDR Certified since 2014. I enjoy working with Adolescents & Adults with Anxiety & Depression, Trauma, Relationships, Substance Abuse, other Addictive Behavior-among other issues. I treat using CBT, Mindfulness, and Solution-Focused/Reality Therapy techniques. I offer counseling tailored to fit your individual needs, in a supportive, and confidential environment. My style has been described as empathetic and compassionate. I partner with my clients in helping them to understand themselves. We identify feelings & thoughts, filtering incongruencies which may be interfering with your personal happiness & relationships.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, when I was on the faculty at the University of Chicago Department of Psychiatry, I published or presented over 80 papers on psychology-related topics. I am also an author of Overcoming Anxiety. In my psychotherapy practice, located in N. Charleston, SC, I draw on various techniques to help you find solutions that can work for you. I bring expertise and a fresh set of eyes; a therapist who can be there for you without any agenda. I have occasional evening and weekend appointments, and work with individuals, to help diagnose, understand and treat many problems. I see clients by appointment only.

In addition to counseling experience, I have several years of experience teaching middle and high school. I use a client-centered approach drawing from different theoretical orientations in order to create a unique plan for each client.
