You've started looking for a therapist because something is getting in the way of your leading the life you want: worsening anxiety, a life event, feeling down, stuck or unhappy. My specialty is individualized counseling based on the personality, needs and goals of my patients. I don't judge. I will be your biggest cheerleader to help you over whatever hurdles are in your way. Everyone wants to lead life to the fullest, and we should feel worthy of that life. All too often I hear patients say, "I don't deserve.." or "I'm not good enough." We get trapped in comparing ourselves to others and hearing past messages of discouragement.

I have an unusual background for a psychotherapist. Before I started my counseling career, I worked as a TV news reporter, an online media executive, and an adjunct college professor. This diverse experience in journalism, business, and education has given me valuable skills that I use in my counseling practice. My sense of humor is another important part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. I also offer life coaching for clients who want to make some changes but don't know where to start.

**CURRENTLY NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS** I enjoy working with clients who are at a place where they are ready for change - whether it is in the area of personal relationships, defeating thoughts and behaviors or seeking to grow. It is my belief that a strong therapeutic relationship is crucial for psychotherapy to be effective. I offer a compassionate, strengths-based approach combined with a desire to help others overcome barriers that prevent them from reaching their goals.

My experience & training in medicine accompanied by my training in mental health counseling allows me to support my clients from a unique perspective. My approach to improved mental health is to address not only the present, but to look to the past to elicit both understanding about learned behaviors and beliefs, while also identifying times of strength that can be applied to present day struggles. I enjoy working with individuals who are facing challenges with relationships, chronic medical illness, perinatal mood disorders, life transitions, parenting and their careers.

I bring a sense of humor and compassion to my work with clients. Your issues may, of course, be serious, but sometimes humor can help bring needed perspective. I provide counseling as well as life coaching. I realize some people are stuck in a rut and just need just 5-10 sessions to get going. Other people might be interested in a more long term approach. I can work with you either way. I realize that you might feel apprehensive about the counseling process, so I have incorporated an easygoing style that greatly helps to reduce people's sense of unease. I want to get to know you so we can get working!

I have helped clients overcome difficult issues from their past and/or present; find freedom from unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors; and go on to live fuller, more rewarding lives as a result. I believe that professional counseling can provide psychological and emotional healing, as well as spiritual wholeness. I integrate the best that psychotherapy has to offer with scriptural truths. I offer the support and guidance you'll need to help identify and overcome any harmful beliefs as well as destructive behaviors that may be preventing you from fully experiencing your best life, the life that God intends for you to live.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
