Life can throw us some curve balls, and sometimes, when trying to deal with these curve balls, we struggle to find ways to cope. For some, coping through food and/or substance use is one of the ways that people try to cope through life challenges. For others it can be isolating, self-harming, or numbing yourself to feelings all around. These coping mechanisms only work for so long, until they don't work anymore, and end up hurting you. Sometimes these maladaptive coping skills only impact you, but often times, others close to you are hurting as well... your spouse, significant other, parents, siblings, and friends.

The issues that bring individuals to a therapist such as depression, stress, grief, or relationship issues don't feel very good. However, these very issues and the path we enter to resolve them can result in enormous opportunities for growth. I work with clients who want to learn more effective ways of relating to others, reduce depression and anxiety, become more aware of personal boundaries, and live more authentic lives in the present moment. Some of my areas of specialty are: parenting issues, relationship issues, divorce contemplation and recovery, and understanding grief and loss.

Center for Neurological Intelligence
Neurological Life Coaching is for individuals and couples inspired to transform the narrative of their story, self-limiting beliefs and habitual negative patterns in order to achieve their goals, reclaim their personal power and experience inner peace. The stories we have created, the emotional states we live in can lead to the triggering of repetitive negative patterns of thoughts, emotions and behaviors. In my Coaching program, we will engage in a journey of education, exploration and powerful experiential processes.

This is not only true in our lives as individuals but in all of our relationships. The decisions we make have power to shape the life we want. Do you feel stuck in life? Is anger limiting your possibilities? Is grief overwhelming your thoughts? What kind of relationships do you want? With your spouse? With your children? With yourself? With your work? As a Life Coach/Counselor my goal is to accompany you on the journey toward the life you want and choose to lead. Your needs drive the process in a forward direction. My hope is to offer wisdom, guidance, accountability, insight and inspiration to keep you moving in the direction of your fullest potential. Therapy is a mutual endeavor. I believe, after 20+ years of experience, that my primary responsibility as a psychotherapist is to help you to reconnect with your own intuitive wisdom, which can get clouded by life stressors and relationship influences. Our work together will be tailored to address your unique needs, whether it be issues associated with depression, anxiety, sexuality, substance abuse, or a traumatic history; anything that creates a barrier to your best self. I also work quite effectively with couples, always looking to improve communication, as well as discovering underlying issues that can create barriers.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. Maybe you're trying counseling for the first time, or maybe you're deciding to get back into it again. Either way, you're likely visiting this page because you're feeling stuck in some way...in your thoughts, in a relationship, at your job, in the past, in old habits. Did you know that every second, your body is being physically changed by the thoughts you think? Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are so intertwined most of the time, that it feels we have no control over any of it. You're likely wanting to take control over your life, but don't know how.

You know you have wounds. You want to heal them, but you don’t know how. If that's true for you, you’re likely familiar with some of these things: Feeling disconnected from others (sometimes even life itself). Feeling misunderstood, lost, lonely, & stuck. Wishing to make sense of life experiences. Being riddled with self-doubt. Struggling with shame. Having an urge to grow but feeling defeated at the same time. Experiencing constant push-&-pull forces between fighting for better or giving in to people-pleasing or settling. Wanting something different, more, & better for yourself. Longing for support, guidance, empowerment & healing.

How does Imago therapy work?
Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.
What is the Imago method?
A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.
How long does Imago therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.
Does Imago therapy work?
There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
