I work with Adults, Young Adults, Adolescents and Couples on a wide range of issues and difficulties. Some specific interests include anxiety and depression , self -esteem, work-life balance, regulating emotions, relationship and communication problems, divorce, life transitions, grief, and parenting issues. I value a collaborative environment to develop new insights and strategies to manage stressors, process emotions, enhance strengths and implement effective life changes. Difficulties processing emotions and a lack of coping skills can keep people feeling 'stuck' and be a barrier to experiencing growth and joy in life.

Symptoms such as addiction, depression , anxiety and feelings of emptiness or inadequacy are messages from your soul. Analysis and psychotherapy can help you understand these messages and resolve the underlying problems. This is the goal of my clinical practice. My philosophy of treatment is based on the theories and principles of Analytical or Depth Psychology, which is a method that focuses on unconscious processes such as dreams and symptoms. Jung's theory was that it is the right and privilege of every human being to live out their own unique destiny, a process he called individuation. My belief in this divine potential in every person inspires my work as a Jungian analyst.

Some of my current interests include working with people facing problems with self-esteem, anxiety, depression , grief, as well as marital, family and peer relationship difficulties.
I place importance on being approachable, thoughtful, sensitive and direct. In therapy, I think it is valuable to focus on both past and present experiences. Looking at your history can help us understand what sets of beliefs, about yourself and the world, might be holding you back from having a better experience in life - and what makes these beliefs so powerful. Examining current behaviors and interactions allows for reflection and adjustment of unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviors impeding your success and personal satisfaction.

I use cognitive behavioral therapy to work with many issues including anxiety, depression , substance abuse, parent/child relationships, relationship issues, trauma, and chronic sickness.
Due to Covid-19, I realize many people are facing financial strain, therfore I will work with you to make counseling affordable. I provide counseling as well as life coaching. I realize some people are stuck in a rut and just need just 5-10 sessions to get going. Other people might be interested in a more long term approach. I can work with you either way. I realize that you might feel apprehensive about the counseling process, so I have incorporated an easygoing style that greatly helps to reduce people's sense of unease.

I believe we all are meant to live an inspired life, and with a little work, we can break through the obstacles that hinder or keep us from thriving. Sometimes those obstacles may define themselves as depression , anxiety, or obsessions. If you are feeling stuck in a routine life, if your present relationship is not moving forward, if the behavior and actions you use to cope with stress have trapped you, maybe it is time for a change. I work with individuals, couples, and marriage partners who want to reach a higher potential in their life.

In my current practice, I work with those who may be experiencing depression , anxiety, adjustment disorders, grief and loss or situational difficulties.
Hello! I would like to offer to you a personal, private space to discuss any issues or problems that are concerning you. Pleasant office building very close to the Ravenel Bridge. This makes very easy access to my location. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1988 and my experience in counseling spans thirty-five years. My focus is working with adults on an individual basis.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
