Most of my clients are teenage boys and adult men, although I occasionally work with
couples
(particularly when the husband/boyfriend would prefer a male therapist).
I have an unusual background for a psychotherapist. Before I started my counseling career, I worked as a TV news reporter, an online media executive, and an adjunct college professor. This diverse experience in journalism, business, and education has given me valuable skills that I use in my counseling practice. My sense of humor is another important part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. I also offer life coaching for clients who want to make some changes but don't know where to start.

Connecting with my clients, creating a safe and trusting environment, and drawing parallels between past history and current challenges are some of my strengths. Welcome! Thank you for taking a moment to read about me and the services that I provide. Originally from upstate New York, I am a transplant to South Carolina. I have a significant history of medical field work, which has increased my awareness of the inextricable
relationship
between the mind and body. I also believe strongly in the healing power of laughter, creativity, nature, and the human connection. My specialty areas are depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, self-esteem issues, and adjustment disorders.

Hello! I would like to offer to you a personal, private space to discuss any issues or problems that are concerning you. It is important to me that you feel very comfortable while having a session discussing your personal life. My office is cozy and quiet in a moderately sized, renovated Mt. Pleasant office building very close to the Ravenel Bridge. This makes very easy access to my location. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1988 and my experience in counseling spans thirty-five years. My focus is working with adults on an individual basis.

Most of the time, I can get you in within the week. I take most insurances. I do a lot of
Couples counseling
. People like me because I am down-to earth and help others to be comfortable in the therapeutic process and be themselves. Getting to the real issues is so important to getting the work done. I am LGBTQ friendly. I also work quite a bit with the military and issues having to do with deployment disrupting family life. I work with folks who have been traumatized. I am a great listener and genuinely care about my clients. People just need to be heard; they need their feelings validated.

My ideal client is one seeking to find their own personal identity. I use a combination of theoretical approaches to accommodate the specific needs for each client. I always start with a client centered approach to build a trusting
relationship
. Once that is established I move into a psychoanalytic approach (counselor and client work to understand the inner life of the client through deep exploration of unconscious and past experiences). Once connections from the past and present are acknowledged, and understood, I end therapy using a reality based approach (focusing on the things in life we can control).

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
