When individuals experience trauma or significant life stressors, it is not uncommon for their lives to feel as though they are unraveling. I am passionate about helping people find healing from the situations and events that have impacted them. I work with adolescents and adults to develop a healthier perception of themselves and to strengthen their relationships with others.

I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield.
If your social battery looks less like “low” and more like “call roadside assistance,” we should probably talk. You’ve held it together for everyone else. You show up. You solve problems. You overthink. You people-please. You make everyone believe you’re doing just fine…while quietly wondering why you’re exhausted by a life that looks pretty damn good on paper. What if you don't need a personality transplant, just someone good at helping you recognize and shift the patterns in your life that no longer serve you? Than't the kind of stuff I love helping people untangle.

Life rarely goes according to plan. Relationships get complicated, past wounds resurface, and challenges like financial stress or feeling disconnected from the people we love can leave us wondering how to move forward. If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone — and you don't have to navigate it by yourself.

My name is Tanner Shirley (she/her), and first, I want to recognize what a big first step this is. Life can be so hard and overwhelming. It is often a burden that many carry alone. Taking the time and space to reach out and ask for help is no small task. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe space for individuals to explore their stressors, relationships, trauma, and challenges. I focus on authenticity, openness, and connection in the healing space. There is no roadmap to our lives, but one thing I strive for is to be a sounding board and a support system throughout your journey.

Welcome overfunctioners. Most of your life, you’ve been called “the responsible one.” You go further, do more, and people always rely on you. They count on you. You’re on top of things, you seem easy going, you rarely need anyone, and anyone that you’d ask would say you seem fine, maybe even great. The competence that exists inside you is real, but so is the collapse that’s either here or on the way.

There are places inside we would rather hide from, places we may have failed or lacked courage, experienced a trauma or deep pain. You can’t go there alone. You need a place where you can work through it all. In our sessions we will build an alliance to dig deeper into who you are and find insight for new perspective and renewed strength. If you are a couple, I will help you work through the barriers that stifle your relationship.

I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, or Aetna insurance, or can provide a superbill for out-of-network clients.
As a person-centered, trauma-informed therapist, I recognize that trauma and difficult experiences can shape our nervous system, emotions, relationships, and sense of self. I support clients in understanding these patterns and navigating trauma and its effects while prioritizing safety, trust, and a manageable pace. I strive to create a collaborative, individualized space that honors your experiences, needs, and goals while supporting meaningful growth.

A college student enduring panic attacks. A parent grieving the loss of a child. A husband learning to become a caregiver for a wife with a chronic illness. A young woman reckoning with the lingering effects of a traumatic childhood. I’ve worked with these and many other people - each with a unique story that brought them to counseling. What they had in common was life experience that had overwhelmed their thoughts and emotions, impacted their relationships, and challenged their sense of self. They also shared the courage to sit with me, allowing an unknown person to meet them in their pain and confusion.

We are in network with most Medicaids, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna.
I love working with clients with medical issues, adolescents, and women who are in leadership positions. As someone who is a woman in leadership and who has a chronic illness, I know first hand the challenges that a physical illness can place on mental health. I also know that it's hard. Balance is possible and you deserve to find the life you want in the face of challenges. I also love working with adolescents, and see adolescence as one of the most rewarding and challenging times in the life course. I approach teenagers with respect, while also challenging them to become the best version of themselves.

Being human is complex, and emotions can feel overwhelming. Many people try to push difficult feelings away, only to feel more exhausted. I help clients understand their patterns, build skills, and work with their emotions instead of against them. I have experience with trauma, anxiety, depression, and emotion dysregulation, and I tailor therapy to what you need most.

I believe it is my calling to help my clients get to a better place and live happier, more fulfilled lives. I hope to help you see your worth, understand your past and how you got to the present, and explore the possibilities for your future! I specialize in attachment theory and use a psychoanalytic approach which simply means that I will listen to your story from childhood up through adulthood to get an understanding of what has happened over your life that may be manifesting today and causing challenges for you. Then we do the work to heal the parts that maybe aren't so whole right now.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?
In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?
The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?
An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?
It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?
HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?
A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?
Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?
Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?
Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy. Learn more about Insurance Coverage and Finding Affordable Therapy
