“You are your best thing.” These words, from one of my favorite novels, Beloved, by Toni Morrison, I believe define the power of therapy. Therapy is a journey of self discovery that aims to help you achieve a sense of inner peace by enhancing awareness and strength. It isn’t without its challenges, though, and my goal is to be a safe and supportive companion on your journey.

I have experienced many losses over the years, however, I really did not understand grief until I lost my husband to cancer.
Taking the first step towards entering therapy is a huge, very personal, and sometimes frightening step to take. Bravo for making it this far! I am a clinical Social Worker who went back to college after a “mid-life” crisis. I had years of therapy myself and felt ready to help others. I am glad I did, because Social Work, by far, has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I firmly believe life experiences shape who we are and how we manage each day in our lives. I grew up in conservative Baptist and career military environment. Each of these environments brought their own challenges as a child and teen.

It’s my joy to assist people as they find their way to balance, wholeness and a life that is meaningful to them and in line with their values. It is my belief that life brings all of us situations that are challenging, whether slightly difficult or seemingly insurmountable. During these times it can be helpful to have someone present with us and truly hear us, for being truly seen and heard, in and of itself, can be healing and therapeutic. I seek to help my clients gain awareness, understanding, and clarity as they go through challenges and find new ways to navigate life that are appropriate for them and align with their values.

I believe that every person has the capacity for growth and healing, and I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered to be yourself without judgement. My therapeutic approach is compassionate, client-centered, and collaborative. I don’t believe in one size fits all therapy because each individual is uniquely different. We’ll work together to figure out what’s getting in your way and find ways to help you feel better and more in control.

Mourning.
I don’t believe in surface-level therapy. I believe in going deeper—into the patterns, the wounds, and the experiences that shaped how you move through the world.
Together, we slow things down and create space for you to understand yourself in a new way—not just intellectually, but emotionally. This is where real change happens.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
