Welcome :) An early question I'll ask a potential client is, 'What do you want from this?' I ask because the answer isn't always obvious. My approach to counseling is more unconventional, relaxed, and strength based. Whether you're looking to cut back (moderate) or completely abstain, we'll collaborate to explore your goals and how we can navigate them together. I lean more towards a harm reduction framework, meeting a client where they are (humanistic), but also challenging stressors and thought patterns that keep them there (cognitive behavioral). Learning your relationship to the problem is a good starting point for me.

I am a Christian counselor/coach and I am passionate about helping men experience freedom from compulsive behaviors and, as a result, a deeper connection with God, themselves, and others. I specialize in helping men struggling with addictive and compulsive behaviors like pornography, sex, drugs, alcohol, food, work, video games, relationships, etc.
After more than 20 years of experience, I have found that true lasting healing does not happen in isolation. Weekly recovery groups provide the accountability, honesty, and brotherhood required for lasting transformation. That is why I now fully focus on the power of group work.

My therapeutic approach is collaborative, compassionate, direct, and unconditionally caring. I utilize a person-centered approach incorporating trauma-informed principles and a harm-reduction lens. I seek to foster brave spaces for deep transformation to take place, where laughter and tears are welcomed to flow freely. Some therapeutic modalities that I incorporate include polyvagal theory, EMDR, attachment theory, and somatic-based processing. These theories are guideposts of my clinical judgment, but ultimately I recognize you as the expert of your own lived experience.

Has the state of the world left you freaking exhausted? Do you drag yourself through your days at work or school with a fake smile on your face? Do you spend more of your free time than you'd like either stuck in a blanket burrito watching your comfort show on repeat and drinking too much or catering to everyone's needs but your own?

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
