My ideal client is a man who feels stuck, overwhelmed by emotions he’s been taught to ignore—whether due to shame, addiction, or religious trauma. He’s searching for meaning, clarity, and a way to break free from the patterns that keep him disconnected from himself and others. He needs a space to process his struggles openly, learn how to embrace vulnerability, and rebuild his sense of self. His goal is to heal past wounds, find emotional balance, and live a more authentic, fulfilling life.

Whether you’re people-pleasing, saying “Yes” to everything, swallowing your needs, and wants in the interest of not being a problem or being too much…you feel like you have to prove that you are good enough. Maybe the hustle shows up at work…feeling like you need to prove your value to your boss by working long hours, prioritizing work over your personal life, and feeling like you need to leap to respond to every email or phone call. Or maybe the hustle shows up with family…feeling that same sense of urgency to satisfy every request from Mom or Dad, catering to their needs and wants out of a guilt rather than genuine desire.

I am honored to be of service to you. I know that trauma and substance abuse and addiction can wreak havoc in one's life. Many of client's find themselves faced with challenges of having to restart their lives during mental challenges and addiction; some may have to fight to regain custody of their children; many of them have co-occurring mental illness that has lead to substance abuse and/or addiction. For some, addiction comes by way of biological, environmental, and social influences, but from my experience, I have learned that mental illness was present before addiction became a factor. Take Control Today!

It’s my joy to assist people as they find their way to balance, wholeness and a life that is meaningful to them and in line with their values. It is my belief that life brings all of us situations that are challenging, whether slightly difficult or seemingly insurmountable. During these times it can be helpful to have someone present with us and truly hear us, for being truly seen and heard, in and of itself, can be healing and therapeutic. I seek to help my clients gain awareness, understanding, and clarity as they go through challenges and find new ways to navigate life that are appropriate for them and align with their values.

I mostly work with adults who feel overwhelmed, worried, stuck, or weighed down by the repeating patterns in their lives. They may be navigating anxiety, trauma, PTSD, OCD, chronic stress or illness, anger, or complex family or identity dynamics. They want to understand what is happening beneath the surface, gain insight, make sense of their experiences, and create meaningful, lasting change rather than manage symptoms alone.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
