“Life is hard, but does it have to be THIS hard?” If you’ve ever had this thought, you are cordially invited to my office to file a formal complaint with the universe. I haven’t heard back about mine yet, but we can wait together. Meanwhile, let’s talk (a lot), laugh (when we can), cuss (if you want to), and cry (when we need to). We can learn to suffer less and enjoy more, even when life doesn’t play nice. How, though? In the face of platitudes like, "Don't worry, be happy," and "Never go to bed angry," it's no wonder we feel broken or weak-willed. No wonder we feel frustrated or hopeless in our relationships.
But we are not broken or beyond hope. We are simply playing a hard game with high stakes and no manual—only well-meaning tips from other amateurs doing their best too. We tell each other that “happiness” is good, the natural state of being, and the ultimate pursuit—which positions unhappiness as the ultimate failure. How's that working out for us?
What we should talk about (perhaps in my office!) is that we all are living for the first time and are entitled to some grace on our first try. That control is an illusion, that apology is a bridge, that we can handle any and everything—temporarily (and it's all temporary). We just have to be willing to play life differently. Let's talk.
