When we start seeking out romantic partners, we seek out what is familiar- what we learned from our parents or caregivers. Sometimes our parents gave us great examples of what a future relationship should be like; other times, our parents showed us what to avoid in those relationships. As adults we are continually trying to recreate what feels comfortable in our future relationships based on our past experiences, namely, our childhood environments. Things can go wrong when we have unmet emotional needs from childhood and then project them onto our partner. This can lead to many disappointments and failed expectations.

Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is my go-to model when working with couples. It is rooted in the theory that we as humans receive an “imago”, or image of love from our parents. In IRT, partners serve as “co-healers”, listening to each other’s needs and stepping outside of their comfort zone to validate and meet those needs in a healthy way.

It can take people sometimes decades to realize that their issues may lie much deeper than the surface in the relationship. It is my absolute honor in couple’s therapy to help partners recognize their unmet needs and find ways to co-heal those vulnerable places in their relationship. It is certainly a process to commit to, but it is worth the journey.

Holiday Grief Support

This group will help clients cope with navigating the holidays by offering practical guidance, peer insight and support, and a space to grieve whether the loss experienced has been 6 weeks or 6 years ago. This group will be Monday evenings, 5:30-7:00pm, for six weeks, from Monday, Dec. 2, 2024 to Jan. 6, 2025. The group will be $200 for the six weeks, with payment plans available.
