“What will people think?” Many individuals in immigrant communities experience anxiety and perfectionism which are shaped by cultural values of responsibility, achievement, loyalty, and high expectations. While these values are strengths, taken to the extreme, you may notice feeling depleted, anxious, self-critical, overwhelmed, or resentful. Many of the people I work with in therapy are struggling with the invisible pressure of feeling like a "failure." I help high achievers move from feeling overwhelmed and self-critical to feeling more resilient and compassionate towards themselves and others.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy teaches skills to manage intense painful emotions without being overwhelmed or needing to escape them. The goal is to accept and validate your emotions, while changing unhelpful avoidant or impulsive reactions to intentional responses guided by personal values.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. We will slow things down, understand patterns driving anxiety and criticism, and work towards having a more compassionate relationship with yourself and others. Where self-improvement and self-acceptance can coexist. If you're ready to find that balance, reach out today.
