Philosophy is not simply an academic subject but an activity. Philosophical counseling is an alternative to psychological treatment in which the counselor and client explore the client's reasoning about the problems that have led him or her to seek therapy. Often we live by unexamined assumptions which we are unaware of making. These assumptions can keep us stuck by preventing inquiry into alternative perspectives. Identifying and critically examining our assumptions enables us to choose more consciously and live more confidently.
I am certified in philosophical counseling by the American Philosophical Practitioners Association. I subscribe to the APPA philosophy that the counselor is not a critic, not even a constructive one, but rather a guide who instills in the client the capacity to philosophize for him or herself.
In our sessions we solve your problems together through philosophical dialogue in which we both actively participate. I respect your beliefs, am forthcoming about my own, and will support you in achieving the goals that you choose for yourself. My ultimate goal is to teach you the philosophical skills you need to solve future problems on your own.
