At our core, we all need to be seen, heard, and understood. Some of us judge this need, which can lead to detachment, shame, disconnect, or depression. Others of us work hard to hide this need, which can look like perfectionism and high achievement, while inside we feel anxious, chronically fatigued, or lonely.
The work I do with clients is to embrace this core need, while also addressing the various ways they have tried to cope with it.
Informed by humanistic and existential theories, I use an IFS approach to recognize and talk about the ways we cope with our need to be known, and the ways this need has not been met. Through curious and nonjudgmental conversation, we come to understand ourselves more deeply in the process of allowing ourselves to be seen in the therapy session.
It is by allowing ourselves to be seen in the therapy session that we strengthen our internal "muscles" for living in the world in relationships with our partner, friends, and family.
