I work with people using a variety of philosophies, but I mostly focus on feelings, insight, relationships, past experiences, meta-emotion (one’s feelings about their emotions), self-worth, self-relating, authenticity, fantasies, and the unconscious. I rely heavily on discussing shame, vulnerability, emotional needs, and creating meaning in life amidst existential truths. I find that the therapist holding unconditional positive regard allows a person to process feelings; gain self-awareness; develop a more free, authentic self; and have more meaningful relationships.
I specialize in working with people struggling with issues related to: family of origin, depression, sexuality, grief and loss, mortality, relationships, significant life changes, and identity formation. I have also worked with foster families, hospice patients and their families, older adults, couples, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
I try to listen without predetermined ideas or objectives. I find this leads to an organic process that creates change and insight originating within the client, making the work more impactful. Building an alliance based on exploration, curiosity, and empathic attunement, I believe, is where the power of therapy resides.
