My primary area of specialty involves psychotherapy for individuals with bipolar disorder (individual therapy, couples and/or family sessions pertaining to the disorder). In terms of broader practice areas, my work is directed towards depressive disorders, personality disorders, adjustment and transition issues (employment change, empty nesting, death of a loved one, divorce, geographic relocation, retirement, etc.), GLBT issues, as well as individuals dealing with adjustment to physical disability. I have been licensed as a psychologist and practicing for over 40+ years.
My psychotherapy with bipolar disorder typically incorporates focus on at least one or more the following areas: A) initial stabilization/psychiatric referral, B) provision of psychoeducation about the disorder, C) acceptance of the disorder, D) modification of maladaptive lifestyle issues, E) supportive psychotherapy and F) brief treatment for relapses.
From 2000 through 2013 I had been Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Virginia and for nine years prior to that I was Director of Mental Health Services at East Carolina University. I am quite familiar with the wide range of mental health issues common to young adulthood and beyond.
