People are driven by a need for connection with others: a friend, a lover, a family, a tribe. When that need is not met our hunger goes underground and turns into anxiety, depression, or addiction. These internal struggles feed fear which can lead us to isolate. Therapy provides a path back toward connection. You talk. I listen. Obstacles to our connection emerge and we begin to understand who you are, what you long for, what gets in your way. As you teach me who you are, you begin to know yourself better, to find your own voice and trust it.

You’re overlooking yourself while over-extending for others, and you're over it. Tasks, responsibilities, and commitments pile on, and you're left wondering what contortions your schedule will make to fit them all in. You're getting that “running on empty” memo from fatigue. And as you take time with the people that matter most to you, it’s hard not to be distracted by stress and worry which has you missing out on enjoying the moment fully. Life may be feeling like you're trying to take a deep and satisfying breath but it falls short because it feels blocked. And here is where we cross paths!

Are you struggling with building the life you want for yourself? Are you struggling with feeling connected and present in your life? Change starts with noticing you are doing things that take from your happiness and here is where therapy can help. I see therapy as a process of exploring what is getting in the way of having more of what we want and less of what we don't want.

The journey through life takes a lot of twists and turns; sometimes we end up in a place that we do not want to be. You might be sitting in a place of depression or anxiety, maybe substance abuse has overtaken your life, or maybe you are struggling to be your best self because of low self-esteem or anger problems. Whatever the struggle is, I look forward to joining you where you are and helping you to find your way out.

I provide a safe space for you to explore, heal, and flourish; a space without judgement or expectation. In this space my priority is to make sure you feel seen, heard, and understood. You need someone to meet you where you are in your unique journey and sit beside you as you move through the suffering.  How will we do this, you ask? I believe in focusing on strengths while challenging unhealthy and unhelpful behaviors that interfere with living your best life. No pain is too small or too big for us to process and find healing comfort.

To me therapy is a place to put it all out there and find new ways of understanding, coping, and healing the swirl of noise in our heads. Ideally, my clients come in and express what’s in their hearts and minds without judgment. Crying, dark humor, wondering if you’re “(blank) enough”, etc. are all welcome. I work with individual clients 12-30ish, friend groups, and roommates and help them explore their relationships -both to others and themselves, their unique version of advocacy or communication, and finding their version of a more fulfilling life.

Not accepting new clients as I transition into maternity leave through January 2025. Shutting off the "inner critic" can often feel impossible. As such, most of the adults I treat struggle with negative beliefs about themselves in addition to anxiety/depression, body dysmorphia/low self-esteem, heartbreak/relationship problems or early attachment wounds/relational trauma. Supporting college students and young professionals who are navigating adulthood and the myriad of personal and professional challenges that can arise during this time is a passion of mine. I also enjoy supporting perfectionists and high-achieving individuals.

When I do my work, I am always asking myself the question, "What is it that this particular person needs in order to grow?" If I can provide you with an environment that helps you experience growth you will feel better. Personal development is what makes us happy and gives us hope. Most people come to therapy because they are hurting, stuck, and don't know what to do next. I will do my very best to help you find your unique self that you have either lost or not yet found.

Thanks for your visit, I'm Lex! Whether you've come as a couple, a family, or an individual, I'm happy you've decided on taking the adventure of pursuing life fulfillment. It's an adventure that I started myself in a gap year before college, and it has led me on a decade of world travels and academic pursuits on seeking to understand the balance between personal authenticity, and well, fitting in. For individuals, this is the biggest concept I offer to you. For couples, I offer an even closer look at this concept. How to embrace your own needs, while also having room for enhancing the relationships around you :)

When working with clients I meet them where they are at in their journey for change- whether they are unsure of what in life needs to be different or if they are already maintaining progress and change. Wherever a client is starting their therapy journey I am here to help increase insight and understanding into problems and help people come up with effective ways to manage symptoms, relationships, or seasons of transition. Areas of focus I help most clients with include skills-based anxiety and depression symptom management, trauma recovery with EMDR or talk therapy, and post-break up or divorce recovery.

Do you feel like you are stuck? Lost or trapped? Have you felt unable to move beyond painful experiences in your past? Do you feel mired in negative thoughts and feelings in the present? Do the same destructive patterns seem to repeat themselves, over and over? You are not alone. Addressing these questions is the first step towards positive change and growth. I believe counseling is often more than seeking to feel better - it is a journey. Therapy can offer an avenue towards self-empowerment, fulfillment and a deeper sense of meaning in your life. A path towards living more authentically.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Austin?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
