Over the last 27 years as a clinical psychologist, I have helped many individuals, couples, and families. Individual clients often enter therapy feeling disconnected and lost. They have reached a point where the usual ways of coping are not working and are open to trying something new. Couples often come to see me feeling exhausted, alienated, and hopeless about their relationship. They wonder whether their relationship can recover and heal. My work with families includes addressing the profound sense of detachment between parents and teenagers, particularly when compounded by the presence of teen depression.
My therapeutic style is warm, engaging, and collaborative. I encourage curiosity about how early experiences influence contemporary situations and help clients learn how to disentangle the two. Couples work on empathizing with and understanding each other's perspectives, which leads to working together to break out of the cycle of discord.
Adult and teen clients learn to express their concerns, feelings and needs in ways that given them the best chance of being understood. Parents become better able to identify the "buttons" that get triggered by their teen so that they can have more control, freeing them from using shame and criticism on themselves or their children.
