I like to the heart of the matter quickly and then work with my clients to co-creative solutions tailored to their specific needs. My clients describe being in therapy with me as being involved in 'deeper work.' The deeper work may be related to the past, but it also could be doing a deeper dive into your current life and finding healthier ways to cope. I am trained in leadership assessment and coaching and I consult with family-owned businesses.

Life is a complex journey that can bring both amazing highs and life-altering lows. We can be faced with difficult challenges, unexpected changes, and raw emotions that our current coping skills aren’t equipped to manage in a healthy way. While I believe we’re all doing the best we can with what we know, there can be times when support from an outside source can help us learn how to thrive through those lows versus just survive.

I work with women in transition, whether you're navigating college, career, marriage, or motherhood, as well as all the other "less shiny" changes. We'll work together to create sustainable rhythms for mind-body-spirit wellness. Your goals take center stage. I offer a somatics-based+EMDR integration of treatment in which we grow resiliency, expand your capacity for presence, and strengthen nervous system regulation.

I work with people across the life span to meet them where they are. I believe people are the experts on themselves, but just need help with navigating what is inside, so they can see their own self-worth and potential. In helping people work through their traumatic experiences, we can take a new approach where the person does not have to tell their story AGAIN and relive their experiences. Instead we can look at how the mind and brain react and recognize how to build resiliency to achieve an optimal level of happiness, calm, and freedom from being owned by emotional responses.

An ideal client would be someone willing to put in the effort to change for themselves. During my internship experience, I had the opportunity to work with individuals who dealt with issues ranging from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and much more. As everyone's journey is different, their goals and needs can be similar. Everyone craves a sense of belonging, and the path to finding a place where one belongs can be tough, but with the help of a caring and compassionate clinician, the journey can become clearer.

I have been a licensed clinical psychologist for 25 years. I have specialized training in child clinical psychology/pediatric psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic and systems theory, and mindfulness. I was a tenured professor at GVSU for several years and my research and teaching interests included anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, pediatric medicine, and self injurious behaviors. I believe that the therapeutic connection is an important component for change. While I am empathic and compassionate, I am also direct.

Life has a way of knocking us down, doesn’t it? It can be tough to create a life that feels fulfilling. We can find ourselves dissatisfied in our relationships, career, or life, and it can be difficult to shake the nagging sense that life has not turned out how we expected or hoped. Perhaps, you are struggling with a difficult boss or a job that doesn’t quite seem to fit your skill set. Or perhaps, no matter matter how hard you try you cannot seem to make progress with your relationships (whether that be your spouse, significant other, family, or friends), and it continues to be distant, disconnected, or conflicted.

Where do you begin? How do you choose a counselor? Seeking help and counseling is a courageous act. I’m glad you’re here! Compassionately and collaboratively, I can help you reduce worry, deepen relationships, foster acceptance, improve mood, adapt to change, navigate interpersonal concerns, etc. I’m here to help you hold a “flashlight” to your life: highlight aspects that may be too hard to look at on your own, gain clarity in an area where you’ve shined the light on for quite some time but can’t quite make sense of it yet, and illuminate skills, resources and values that have been muddled for you.

I believe that therapy and support are essential to every person; everyone deserves to have a safe space where they can be open and honest about their feelings, experiences, hopes, and fears. I am a therapist who will meet you where you're at, provide non-judgmental spaces that allow you to be honest with yourself and with the world about what you need and how you can get where you want to go. I work with individuals, couples, and families. It can be overwhelming reaching out for help when you are feeling lost, hopeless, anxious, or confused. It can be scary to begin your therapy journey. My role is to make sure that you feel comfortable to open up in ways that have previously felt impossible. On day one, I will join with you, hear your story, find where you want to go, and walk this path with you in a thoughtful, intentional, and caring way.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Grand Rapids?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
