There is much to be said of the idea that a therapist should be a “good fit.” If you don’t feel there is a connection to build on and lessons to be learned, there is no harm in stating that truth and moving on. I’ve worked with people for a few months and some for many years. It’s important to feel you are getting something from your therapy. Therapeutic relationships perform the best when both therapist and client are mutually invested in the work. I deeply appreciate clients who commit and face the sometimes-painful work of therapy, knowing they are working toward a better day, a better life.
I’ve worked with and welcome individuals from many different walks of life, including those on the autism spectrum, artists, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Finding your self-acceptance is often paired with finding a community, but doing that is a process of trust and review, moving toward the joyful place of being content in your own skin.
I believe therapy should be the place you work on you. It should be a place where you feel you can be with your thoughts, dreams, and deepest feelings, with someone you trust and believe has your best interest at heart. While it takes time to develop real trust, getting to work right away on skills and techniques is the best place to start.
