Robert W Lawson
What I think helps and what I try to do, is create a safe, quiet, comfortable, and caring environment where the client and I can be as "honest" as possible...in terms of being real and authentic, without judgement or false pride. Pride is good; false pride is a defense, hinders self disclosure, and works against the therapy process. Together, in conversation, the client and I, with focused attention, strive to "understand" the problem(s), and co-create possible resolutions, insights, and behavioral interventions.
If the problem is more general, we work on a philosophical/psychological level. Developing a relevant, evolved, and perhaps spiritual philosophy can serve the client in his or her particular life situation. I consider myself a humanitarian who has had time to suffer his share and do some serious thinking.
I like being a therapist, and have a solid work ethic. I taught psychology in the psychology department at UNC Chapel Hill for 21 years and have an in depth understanding of the field. I live in the woods on water, and find great solace and wisdom in nature.
