I have been in practice for many years and have been involved in the training of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. I have come to believe that each person is unique and that the therapy has to be tailored accordingly. In fact, the art of relating deeply depends on the ability to be able to understand the other' personality in its’ own right and to be able to respond to their individuality with a great deal of acceptance and warmth. The establishment of a good therapeutic relationship is one of the keys to achieving a positive outcome.
Although my advanced training prepared me to deal with the most complex type of psychological problems, i have found that communicating a simple sense of deep acceptance and belonging goes a long way in making people feel better about themselves and their life. Providing the sense that one is "OK" enables better relating to one's Self and one's problems.
I believe that the ultimate aim of therapy is to develop the inner freedom and skills necessary to move through life in a more centered and confident manner that begins with improved self esteem and ends with a greater capacity to face life's difficulties in a less alone and more related place. Of course, a good sense of humor helps the whole enterprise.
