Being a psychotherapist for the past 20 years has and continues to be a journey with people that validates my belief healing and deep change is truly possible. The therapeutic relationship which is a special and sacred connection is by far the most essential ingredient to real shifts in our attachment systems and long held unconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world. My background is mainly centered in Body/Mind experiential psychotherapy. I help people to slow down and bring mindful awareness to their experience. This allows us to study together what’s happening in the here and now.

I work primarily with individuals struggling with grief: whether related to loss around death, illness, divorce or a break-up; as well as job termination and retirement. Life transitions of many kinds usually entail a grieving process-even positive ones such as a new marriage, career change, graduation from high school or college, a geographic move or the birth of a child. With these changes, you may feel uneasy that you are not as happy as you "should be". We are always writing the story of our lives. What do you want more of? What needs to be let go? I offer supportive space for that creative process; to reach for a bigger dream.

Success, change, happiness, hope, kindness, balance - these, among other traits, are things that we strive for & work towards in life but at times feel like they are completely & totally out of reach. Sometimes there are roadblocks & barriers that make the future seem unobtainable and that there is nothing but darkness ahead. It's moments like these that define us. When we are at a crossroads and important choices need to be made - this is where I come in. I wish to offer support, guidance, and help with the hope and intention that together, change can happen, skills can be built and goals can be attained.

Current practice is provided 100% through telehealth. I work with preteens, teens, and adults, holding a certification for the treatment of Child and Adolescent Anxiety as well as a certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies. I place high value on providing compassionate, holistic care for each person and family I work with. I will work collaboratively with you and/or your child to uncover strengths and problem solving abilities, broaden self-awareness, increase distress tolerance, and when appropriate to decrease the body's overactive response to anxiety and stress. Together we will identify pathways to reach your therapeutic goals.

I am NOT accepting new patients currently As we move through life, we may find we become anxious, depressed, begin to lose sleep, become more irritable, or turn to unhealthy habits to help us feel better or simply survive. We also may start to ask deeper questions, like "Why is this happening?", "Where am I going to end up?", and even "Who AM I, anyway?" The treatment approach at Cairn Psychotherapy addresses both the psychological and spiritual aspects of our challenges, identifying coping strategies and skills that will help you move forward on a healthier, more content, path.

I am queer/ lesbian and my work with the queer community holds expansive & fluid definitions of sexuality & gender and strives to remove barriers to gender-affirming care.
Over my career, I have worked with many folks who are in process of evaluating their lives, relationships, and values. This may be in conjunction with a mood disorder, questioning their relationship with substances, or seeking an understanding of the intersection of their identity, life events, and socio-political context. My hope is that we both bring our authentic selves into the room, acknowledging the inherent and invisible differences and privilege we each hold. You do not have to feel entirely ready for change to reach out for help. We all deserve support, exactly as we are.

In my 30+ years of experience as a therapist, I have worked with a wide and very diverse array of clients, whose issues have ranged from mild and transient to severe and chronic. I opened my private practice roughly seven years ago, having worked previously for various mental health agencies. I have a special interest in working with gay and lesbian clients, who may be having associated lifestyle or relationship issues. I also have a special interest in adults who were abused or neglected as children and who struggle with depression or chronic esteem problems as adults.

Life crises or challenges can be times when spiritual and/or personal values are re-examined, and opportunities arise to find new balance and wellbeing. Caring for oneself, and discovering one's qualities or what matters most, are part of healing of mental, emotional and physical bodies. This work provides a safe, non-judgmental space to examine feelings, beliefs and questions - a place to unwind traumas that may have us stuck in patterns that are no longer healthy. We find a new way to align with inner dreams or the intention of happiness that is unique to each individual.

How can I find a therapist in Bristol?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
