I see both individuals and couples, and I am especially interested in helping people work through relationship problems.
People often tell me they want a therapist who will both listen AND have something to say. I believe that emotional safety and good two-way communication must be established in order for therapy to be successful.

Experiencing relationship distress, feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns with your partner, grappling with lingering past hurts, and struggling to define your identity are all challenging experiences that can greatly affect your well-being.
You're not exactly sure when it began, but each day, a strange emptiness takes over, making everything seem dull and lifeless. It feels like there's a vital piece missing that everyone else has. You experience a deep sense of loneliness and feel misunderstood by those around you. Your relationships have become an ongoing challenge, trapped in negative patterns that seem impossible to break. Communication with your partner is a mix of arguments and hurtful silent treatment. You've noticed yourself pulling away from friends because they don't seem to understand you. Despite your best efforts, you find yourself anxious and all alone.

I believe authentic relationships are the key to authentic healing. We all have experienced pain, struggles, or difficult transitions in our lives, but we have not always had the opportunity to reflect, heal, and learn from these moments within the context of a close and safe environment. I believe that a collaborative and therapeutic relationship can be a life-changing experience as it helps you process current and past pains, become more self-aware, develop more meaningful relationships, and experience thriving in your life.

As a psychotherapist I work to create a warm, safe environment where deep personal issues can be explored. I believe that we are shaped by our relationships and life experiences, and life in New York is notoriously fast-paced, hectic, and, yes, sometimes frightening, The constant changes we face such as career change, job loss, relationship loss, an empty nest, can create anxiety and even depression. I would like to bring my life experience and training to help you work through any or all of your major life issues to enable you to improve your life and coping skills.

Additionally, I work with individuals who are struggling with: stress, anxiety, life transitions, grief &loss, depression, relationship issues, LGBTQ-related issues, & with artists struggling with performance anxiety.
As humans, we never stop confronting the adversities of life. Although we cannot control the ups of downs of everyday life, we can learn how to respond to and manage stress and tragedy differently than how we have done so throughout our lives in order to survive or tolerate the unbearable. Having a safe and supportive place to address past learned behaviors and coping strategies is crucial for self-healing and growth. As a nonjudgmental and empathetic therapist, I work with clients' strengths which often leaves clients feeling more empowered and with a new sense of self.

I help clients overcome frustrating relationship patterns, self-sabotaging behavior, and persistent depression and anxiety. In our sessions, you'll find a thoughtful, supportive, and creative environment where clients work at the pace most comfortable for them. My approach to therapy seeks to align an individual's feelings, values, and actions. Our emotions motivate our behavior, and when we want to change but seemingly can't, we're often working against our emotional selves. Clients work with me to tap the right motivation to meet their goals. I treat individuals, couples, and parents.

People call me "The Relationship Expert" because I have helped them resolve issues in relationships, or helped them find and keep a relationship! With couples, I strive to provide a safe space to explore all possibilities for happier outcomes.
I am warm, open, and informal. People feel safe and comfortable enough to trust me with their secrets, fears, and intimacies. I am aware that by the time you call a therapist, you want some relief! So, I work from the "Top Down" -- giving stress-relief, relaxation, new perspectives, and ways to help you to feel better quickly --as well as from the "Bottom Up", so you understand why you are the way you are, and how you might change what you want to...

In my practice, I focus on helping people understand and alter the patterns that stand in their way to actualize their potential, feel alive and whole. I treat people who are striving to find love, or feel lonely in their present intimate relationships or/and their families. I work with people to find a voice to speak their frustrations, longings, and desires, and the courage to use this voice with others. In the safety and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship we seek to understand the origin and role that feelings of anxiety, shame, and worthlessness play so that they lose their inhibiting power, and dissolve away.

As with any relationship, the one between a therapist and client involves a certain amount of chemistry.
I am a clinical psychologist with twenty-five years of experience in the practice, supervision and teaching of psychotherapy in New York. I would say my approach is warm, supportive and flexible--responsive to the challenge a client faces. I have served on the medical faculty of two universities, including seventeen years at Columbia, and try to balance the benefits of evidenced-based treatment with the sensitivity of psychoanalytic and family approaches; I am certified in these last two areas. My goal is to help clients overcome obstacles to working and loving with greater pleasure and clarity.

I believe that using evidence-based techniques in a compassionate therapeutic relationship is the key to successful treatment. My work with my clients is grounded in empathy and connection while helping individuals gain insight into their struggles. As your therapist, I will help you to learn how to reduce the impact and influence of painful thoughts and feelings while taking action to build a life that is full and meaningful. You will also learn how to implement new techniques and skills and, ultimately, how to be your own therapist.

Where you wake up confident, ready to take on the day no the drama around you, no matter your relationship status, no matter….
You wake up everyday and start the same daily grind. Week after week, you start to wonder "When does it get better?" You join the gym, try to meet new people, but you don't feel any different. You want to feel happy, confident and yourself again, but life keeps getting in the way. Plus, walking around wearing a mask is getting exhausting and you are ready to do something different, you just don't know where to begin. Especially since you don't feel right talking to other people, you don't want to feel like a burden. So you keep things to yourself, but it is time to start thinking about YOU and how to be happy again. You deserve it!

I believe that the relationship between myself and the other is unique in that as a team we must discover and create an atmosphere necessary for this change.
"I'd like to introduce you to someone you may not know very well, YOURSELF." I've been practicing psychotherapy since 1982 integrating both psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral perspectives. The psychotherapy journey can ultimately lead to the enhancement of conflict-free thinking and behavior which in turn can contribute to a more satisfying life.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
